Now that the Froyo update is on hold...

From the Sprint website:

UPDATE:
There have been an increased number of calls into Care regarding issues with the Epic following the upgrade. As a result, the upgrade will not be pushed to more devices until a resolution for these issues is in place. The OTW update on the Samsung website will also be taken down.
Sprint and Samsung are actively working to correct these problems and release the update to all devices. I will provide updates as I receive them.
Where is this web site? My sad story: Went to unlock my screen and found what looked like a manual upgrade screen was already on. It looked like I had to select the next step, because nothing happened for several minutes. It had a large android figure and an exclamation point in a triangle. I was getting on a plane (2PM CST) and needed to access my mobile boarding pass! So I got my boarding pass, and didn't find out that the update was on hold until now. Just curious about what happens now.

Glad I have the update.zip file saved in a few places so I can update my brother's phone from DK28 to EB13 when I go back home.

I have it saved too. Just emailed it to a few friends with instructions on how to do a manual update.

I think the 2.2 update is absolutely amazing for the epic. It's a huge update and really unlocks the device's potential. My install is completely bug free and lightning fast.

Agreed!

I'm a little confused. I waited for the OTA, saw all the recent posts about it being on hold, and decided to just do the manual. I want to the Sprint website, followed the link to the manual update, downloaded the file, put it on the phone and followed Samsung's directions and it worked fine. took all of about 8 minutes.

Upgrade went smoothly, everything works fine so far, flash works great, and I can now stream movies from my PC with Subsonic. I haven't tried the GPS yet, but everything else seems to work great. So, not only do I not know where the rumor of the Sprint site saying it's on hold came from, but I don't know what all the "Complaints" have been. Heck, even the ones in here are fairly minor from what I can see...but I haven't had a chance to read all of them. Maybe it's just the OTA version that's on hold. (again, probably already said here somewhere)

I don't understand. How does Sprint beta test these updates?

It would seem if they chose a group of real users to beta test this software they would have found the issues quickly.

Is the the developers that are the testers?
Samsung does the testing. Sprint only tests the update once they get it. It is not going to include every user's configuration.

And never, ever do an OTA update of a major release like this if you can help it. If you want to make sure you have no issues, wipe your phone first, apply the update from update.zip, then wipe again. The OTA updates are normally "delta" updates meaning they just overwrite the files that have changed. This is asking for trouble. The cache is not properly cleared. Wipe it, install, and wipe again.

I tried the same thing and again got the "Cannot copy update: The path is too deep" error...

Finally got it to work for me last night.

Round 1: Download the file to my PC Desktop > transfer to SDCard. No Luck

Round 2: Mount phone and download file directly to SDCard thru PC. No Luck (see quoted error above)

Round 3: Use Dolphin browser on phone to download file>move file from download folder to SDcard root. Worked like a charm!

Will be going through the list of ID'd bugs here in a minute, but no issues noticed so far. Battery seems to take a little longer to charge but lasting much longer as well & GPS seems a little more accurate (mine was good to start with).

I used your method 3, albeit it with Zirco browser, and it worked like a charm...did it right at work in-between phone calls!

I'm glad I got it when I did. I haven't seen any issues with 2.2, except for the mysterious blue LED issue which seems to have gone away, and the spontaneous reboot that I observed the day after I upgraded. But it's been OK since then.

I actually don't have any media on my phone so I dunno about the SD card. I can see all my photos just fine. This whole update thing is a major embarrassment for Samsung though.

Rest assured they will have a fix ready "as soon as possible."

This whole update thing is a major embarrassment for Samsung though.

Totally agree. Although I don't know if its Samsung or Sprint or both to blame?

I disagree with that. For the most part. I think the embarrassment is the over-reaction of them pulling the OTA update. I've only been a droid user since November 2010, followed instructions here for a manual update and have ZERO issues with Froyo. And I didn't do a factory reset either!

What's the best program/method on the Epic to move files to the root of the SDcard?

I'm not speaking to the update itself; but the length of time the update has taken to develop, putting a "premium" device behind the curve, and the repeated missed publicized launch dates (albiet soft dates) and stumbles. All of this on top of how Samsung/Sprint has handled Android updates on other devices (Moment)...

I don't know if its all Samsung's fault or how much has to do with Sprint software over the top, but not something I want to put up with on regular basis when I'm paying premium dollars for devices and service...

This is asking for trouble. The cache is not properly cleared. Wipe it, install, and wipe again.

Do you mean to "clear cache" on all of the apps when you mention to wipe the phone or is it a factory reset?

Can I also use the default brower on my phone to download the update and then moving to the root SD?
I'm at work right now but jonsing to try the update.

Sorry, very new at this still...

That I will agree with. And my understanding is the hold up was with Sprint wanting to make sure 2.2 would in fact be an improvement.

One thing to keep in mind when telling people to wipe their phones: Many people are on stock Eclair, are relatively new to Android and have no idea how to back up the data on their phones. It might be good to offer information on how to do that from a non-rooted phone without recommending root-dependent utilities. Backing up first would resolve a lot of new users' fear.

Hayzooos: There's still a lot I don't know about Android. While I knew how to install the update already, I still thanked you for being clear and methodical because it would have been nice to read your directions in the beginning. Opaque style can be an art, but clear directions are a godsend (and that's coming from an agnostic).

I'm curious as to how many of the complaints were from folks who rooted and previously had custom Roms etc and how many were from stock users who had plain DI18.
My guess would be that 100% of the people who had upgrade problems and called in to sprint were users who were running stock eclair. Anyone running a custom rom would just wipe 3x and reflash. If they had problems, they would look for answers in the forums. A solution would be found and no call to useless tech support would be considered.

I think that was a compliment, so thanks? And you're welcome?

Believe me, there's a TON I don't know about Android either, but I'm learning more and more, mostly by reading things on here. I don't ask too many questions, but now and then, I'll throw one out there.

I haven't even taken the plunge to root my phone yet, but I'm leaning more and more that way. I'm just worried what opening pandora's box might do for my marriage ;)

I love tinkering with things, and once it starts...it's tough to stop!
