woodstorm, you'll be very happy with your X. I also hope you'll feel like me and think back fondly of your amazing little Eris.
It is a fact of phone life and technology that people will continue to move on to bigger / better / different phones (depending on your perspective, of course) and of course, this is not the first farewell thread we've seen--nor will it be the last (for the Eris or any other phone for that matter). I myself, am not the least bit bothered by these types of threads and even celebrate the fact that people are passionate enough about their phones and the folks that they read along or corresponded with to say goodbye.
A slightly twisted thought did cross my mind re. how some folks in other threads have reacted that made me think of this quote from the first Lord of the Rings book and movie:
Bilbo Baggins: "Alas, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits." [cheers abound.] "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."
No mal-intent is directed at anyone by the above...just an observation of how some folks take the moving-on that occurs [plus, its a really great quote

Well said scarey alien. I just felt compelled to give some thanks to those who helped me out. I truly think that this Eris group are a more civilized bunch. I saw some of the things being said back and forth in the Thunderbolt threads and it definitely aided in my decision to go with the X. I will still have the Eris and will probably still play with it some. It's just an easy phone to play around with.

Well, I don't know about the Thunderbolt threads, but there's some very good and very knowledgeable folks over in the X forums (like Steven58, colchiro, binary visions, to name just a very few). bberryhill0 took a little (undeserved, IMO) flack today for espousing the continuing virtures of the Eris, so there's still a few that did not always have as good a luck with their Erii as we have
. I think the folks that are "left" here in the Eris forums are truly great folks (read "doogald", "erisuser1", etc.) who want to continue helping-out and learning what can be done with this great little phone. Good folks are good folks no matter where you put them and Android Forums, for the most part, is a great place to hang out.

Another human in this world who has no qualms about waxing philosophical about things mundane as cell phones, a man after my own heart.
Yesterday I had my Eris out, browsed around here a while with it on wifi (just the Fascinate on network), played a bit of Toss It, etc, then shut it down.. I will never get rid of that phone.

I downloaded GSB 1.6 yesterday and plan to load it up on my phone this afternoon...there are certainly lots of things that we can continue to learn and play with on our Erii
Heck, I still use my first generation iPod Touch eight hours every day (web cam monitoring) -- if it still works, use it!

I also never really understand the backlash directed at people who post threads like this... it's not like you're gloating about moving on to a bigger, faster phone. You're merely saying "see ya later" and thanking the extremely helpful people who have helped make this phone so much better than I personally had ever imagined it could be. You should definitely check back in occasionally and I know that I would love to know what you think of your new Droid X (perhaps in this very thread). It's such a discouraging thing when I go into my local Verizon store and play with the newer phones, which I KNOW are super fast. But because people play on them all day, download random crap, there are like 50 running processes and who knows if they're maintained at all (i.e. cache cleaning, etc.) they seem very laggy. I'd love to play with a brand-spankin' new X or D2 or Fascinate to see how they are. Anyway, feel like I'm rambling now, just wanted to say 'enjoy!'

I will definitely let you know how it runs. Really interested to see just how much faster they are. My wife has an X but she won't let me anywhere near it.
I didn't know that there was a negative feeling toward these kind of threads. I always thought they were started by people who wanted to give a shout to everyone who helped them out.
Now, y'all stand back and watch crack this bootloader...

I recently picked up an almost new D2 for about $240. From the Eris to the D2, there is a huge performance increase, obviously. You know how snappy your Eris is right after wiping everything and installing a new ROM? Yeah, that's how the D2 is all the time, plus a little more! I ended up choosing the D2 because I wanted to give a physical keyboard phone a try, and the X is just too big for my liking. I've found that my use of Swype and the physical keyboard to be around 50/50, so far.
My wife now uses my Eris without any calling plan attached. She loves being able to use all the functions of the phone minus call making. Just connect to our home WiFi and she can check emails, play some Words with Friends, and read books with Aldiko. Yup, we'll be keeping the Eris around for along time to come.
It was a great introductory smart phone for me (heck, only paid $10 out of pocket for the thing), but in the end I'm a tech junkie. Upgrading is a must for me.

Ahh the eris... im poor so i "upgraded" to the lg ally which suprisingly with some kick ass roms and oc managed a linpack of 10.3 and a quadrand of 1300! BEST low end phone ever, but yes the eris was good to me htc sense almost gave the illusion of not lagging lol

I loved my Eris. My intro to Android. Surprised I didn't blow the thing up tinkering with it so much. Took forever to get the balls to root it. Then once I did it was all over. XTRSense made it the phone it should have been. Finally my usb port stopped working. I got off the phone with CS and they couldn't get it working. 6 days past warranty, they pushed my contract up a whole year. Being out of warranty I took it apart and cleaned it up with canned air and deoxit. Put it back together and it was working like new. I had an upgrade available now so i checked the trade in value on the Eris and it was $132. Only paid $99 so I sent it in and got my giftcard. Used it to upgrade to an Inc. on a one year deal. $0 out of pocket after rebate. Wish I didn't have to trade it in, but couldn't pass up getting more $ for it than I paid.

Just installed the surprise OTA on my Eris and thought I'd drop by to say hi. The Eris has been a great phone and this forum has been a life-saver. Thanks to everyone. I've still got a few months left before I'm free to grab the next new thing.

I really do miss the good ole' days... waiting for OTA's, apprehensively going through the whole root process thanks to the awesome Ultimate Root for dummies thread... Carmen being called jailbait... our resident sexy vampire and dapper green gentleman... And I'll never forget Caddy.
I'm still barely hangin on to my resilient little Eris, once prices drop a little more it will be DInc for me and The Eris will be passed along to my husband.
I can't believe I'm all nostalgic about a black little soft touch phone with a grungy track ball and loose volume buttons. Awww I'm such a geek!

Well, Android and the Eris are very new to me.
The Eris was given to me, so I had nothing to lose by rooting it. And I am loving this phone. I am not eligable for an upgrade until mid 2012, so I activated this phone to see how Android was, so when I was eligable I'd have a better knowledge of whether I like Android or iOS better. I'm now certain I'll be an Android user for life. And with my Rooted and Rommed Eris, it will be more than satisfactory until the time of my next upgrade, when I'll be saying farewell.
Maybe it's because it's my first smartphone of anykind. Maybe it's because I'm easily impressed, but I absolutely love this phone, despite it's minor flaws. But I am also a techie, so when I'm able to get a bigger, badder phone I definitely will. Who knows what phone that will be, in mid 2012. 4G for certain. HTC for certain. All touch-screen, no qwerty for certain. Android for certain.

Damn. Didn't realize that this thread had grown. Still using my Eris for a media player. It actually has decent battery life when you aren't using it constantly. The newer phones are awesome with the speed and power but I still enjoy the Eris. There's just so much more you can do with it. Root and ROM on the X just isn't the same.

Actually, it does everything I need: e-mail, Calendar, Facebook, and oh yes, its a phone too.
I put some games on it for my granddaughter (monster maze, bubble maze, etc.)
The only reason I would upgrade (to an X) is I would prefer a bigger and better screen and a better camera.
Other than that I might become the last man standing with the eris...
But good luck to you to your new phone.
