So many things, not sure what to put here

So, last August (I think) I got my Captivate through Newegg. I opted for the $60 year long insurance. I had one of the good phones that didn't have any problems at all. In October I dropped my phone and the screen shattered. I sent it in to get replaced and they sent it back with a new screen, but the bottom right corner was loose and it stuck up above the frame. It also affected the touch sensor making it so every time I pressed the back button, it would detect me pressing the search button.

I sent it back and they fixed that, but then the phone would stop detecting my touch. I would turn it on and 5 times out of 6 it wouldn't read my touch, but I could press the buttons on the bottom and they would light appropriated, but the OS didn't register it. On the times that it would work, it would be just a matter of time before I would press the power button to turn it on and I would be unable to lock it because the touch sensor crapped out again and I would have to pull the battery and reset it a few times before I could use it again.

I emailed the insurance company (Mobile Device Protection Association) and told them what was up and requested they replace the phone. They replaced the phone without ever asking for the original phone back. I got the new (refurbished) phone and it had the random shutoff problem. By random, I mean every time I would turn the screen off the phone would give up and die. I e-mailed the company twice about it and received no response. My account was also locked out so I could not file a request for service any more. I'm filing a complaint with the BBB over this, but haven't had the time to write a decent complaint yet. Anyway, I got the captivate keep alive app and the system monitor program and it seemed to keep it going well, but I hate having to run a stupid app to keep my phone working.

I ran the 2.2 update with kies, but it kept saying my phone was an unregistered device...so I gave in and started to put Cognition 4 on it. When I got the point after doing the master clear I decided to try doing the official update again just for poops and giggles. Well, it worked. I updated to the official froyo version and things seemed to work well. I went a day or so without the phone shutting off, but then it finally did. Then I went and re-stocked the phone and put Cognition 4 on it. It is almost exactly like the official update, but without the bloatware and with a few nice additions, such as being already rooted. It hasn't shut itself down yet. I don't think this will fix the shutdown problem, but with froyo (both official and cognition) the frequency has been reduced, and it hasn't happened with cognition yet (though I've had cognition 4 on it for less than 24 hours).

Also, I still have that phone with the touch sensor not working on the screen. I tried loading cognition4 on it, but it hasn't fixed the problem. Has anyone experienced this problem? I would love to be able to fix it so I have a backup in case my current one craps out.

So that's it. Sorry for the long post, but I figured I'd share my experiences from the beginning until now.

I would get a new phone from AT&T, assuming you have an AT&T captivate and not a Rogers. I bought my phone from Radioshack, not AT&T. The phone still has a 1 year warranty through AT&T. They will replace the phone with the random shut down problem with a refurbished phone.

Supposedly there is no fix for the random shutdowns.

I was unaware they would do this even though I didn't buy it from them. It was indeed an AT&T refurb. I don't have the box anymore, and it didn't come with paperwork, but I'll see what happens. Thanks for the tip!
