Going abroad - switching WiFi off enough ?

Got a UK t-mobile desire, and i'm going to europe for a week but don't want to come back to some huge phone bill.

I've got these 4 buttons (bluetooth, wifi, 3G and GPS) from this funky team i found in here on one of my homescreens, so if i just keep the 3G switched off, will that stop the phone using the internet abroad or do i have to stop everything like the weather bit and friendstream auto-update etc all manually ?

Are there any handy apps for going abroad and preventing costs and stuff as well by any chance ?

Always thought the UK was part of Europe!

Turn it to airplane mode (will disable all connections)

Use wifi at your hotel, if they have it.

Isn't there a "data roaming" option in the wireless/network settings (mobile networks, mobile data)? I'm pretty sure there is, but it's been a long time since I used stock software (there is one in my phone).

Just turn data roaming off and you should be OK. But to play safe, turn off mobile data before leaving the country.

Switch Airplane mode on, and that's all you gotta do. It will stop access to any networks or the internet or whatever. You'll basically have a phone with like no sim card sort of.

I think it would be reasonable to assume that medic-one would still like to have the basic phone capabilities of the Desire - which is what it is first and foremost - like, making and receiving phone calls, sending and receiving text messages, even if occasionally and in emergencies.

My advice would be turn off mobile data by pressing and holding the power button and selecting "mobile internet off" (or some such. I cannot say what the exact wording is, as I am not using the factory installed stock Desire operating system).

Not only will it ensure that you do not get charged for expensive data, but you will also get a better battery life.

As other have said, you need to make sure mobile data is off. And as an extra precaution, go to:

Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Network > Untick 'Data Roaming' if it isn't already.

That set up worked for me for my week in France a few weeks back. As someone else said, if your hotel or something has Wifi, then feel free to turn that on when needed. The only charges you'll incur for that are the charges that the hotel sets - e.g. 5€ per hour.
