Ipad or Xoom??

Status
Not open for further replies.
So the IPAD2 caught up to the specs of the XOOM. It certainly didnt leap frog it. IPAD is still handcuffed with IOS and Apples crazy design of not letting any files be shared like any other platform allows.

Honeycomb is a significantly better platform for tablets than IOS. The IPAD2 will be surpassed in specs several times before IPAD3 comes out.

But we do need some apps. Apps is what will make or break android tablets at this point. HW and OS is already superior.

LOL, see shows how long it's been since I've used iTunes. The one device I had left a horrible taste in my mouth.

Believe me, I of all people can understand. More than you know. ;) However, I give Apple props where they warrant it and removing DRM on their music and upping the bitrate was the decent thing to do. And who knew...their freaking sales shot up the moment they did it, too. SHOCKING! :D I wish the same would happen for movies but I have a feeling that won't be the case. So we're forced to find workarounds to get our legit content on a Xoom. Kind of a pity. Personally, I'd love to see someone like Amazon go all out and make a connector software for purchased and rented content on the Xoom. All us amazon prime people would go nuts for it. But I don't just mean the ability to stream. I mean the ability to download purchased content to the Xoom. Come on, Amazon...what are you waiting for? You need a portable device that doesn't say "microsoft" on it.....right?? :D

This is absolutely true. All the people complaining about the price of the Xoom fail to realize something. This is the showcase device for HC, a brand new tablet OS. There are going to be tablets all over the spectrum of price/features/size/etc. Honeycomb will improve. Apps will be written and released. The openness of the platform will allow some great things to happen.

None of this matters to the general public (this is who Apple has targeted). The very first thing a potential buyer sees is PRICE (whether you want to admit it or not, this is reality). When the regular Joe Blow goes into BestBuy to purchase a Tablet they will see Xoom ($799) and iPad 2 ($499), guess which product gets purchased. It does not matter that the $499 iPad 2 is only 16gb (this is plenty of space for the average user), this is the device that will be bought, plus it has Apple's name behind it. The only way these Android Tablet makers are going to be able to compete is to get a Tablet to the $499 price point (if that means putting out a Xoom with 16gb, then so be it). Without market penetration these Honeycomb tablets will be Niche products for the techies and will ultimately spell their doom. I want this to succeed as I like Android (I have a Rooted HTC EVO and a Nook Color running Honeycomb and Froyo) over Apple's closed ecosystem. But Apple knows what they are doing and going head to head with them is going to be hard (especially when these Honeycomb tablets are $300 more expensive)

No I get all that. I think you missed my point. The Xoom ISN'T the device that is going to compete with the iPad for the general user space. That is what I meant. It's the showcase device for high end users. I realize this is the iPad vs Xoom thread, but, I think at the end of the day, that's not going to be the "fight" to watch. It's the device that shows what can be done on Honeycomb. As other devices come out all across the price spectrum, we'll see more competition against the iPad. But I do agree that price is going to be the main issue with general users. I think that's going to come this summer and after. For now, the Xoom is, IMO, not the device to compete directly with the iPads. Not for most of the users out there.

The driving issue for iPad and iPod (besides amazing marketing- must admit this) is the fantastic app ecosystem. Android shot themselves in the foot out of the gate, how they designed app space and this slowed dev investment WAY down. In short, Android and OEMs designed a shopping mall (app market) without any parking space (app space).

With the newer phones and tablets having at least 2gb of device space and ESPECIALLY Honeycomb that now has dynamic storage, the app market will catch up VERY fast for Android.

Android was kind of dumb requiring allocated fixed space for all non 3.0 OS versions. They have fixed it now, so give it one year. The playing field for apps will be very different.

Still luv my iPod, but iOS is about to see some heavy competition.

added:

One key though for Apple is far less fragmentation, due to hardware variability.

BTW, I still think the $350 gTablet is a better total value than your fancy shmancy Xooms! ;)

Apple is always going to have great hardware. The question is do you want to be locked into the Apple ecosystem. They do have some conflicts of interest. I had an ipad and still have an iphone 4. Don't mind the restrictions on my phone but I want a pad that has the freedoms of a laptop. You are not going to get that with Apple. iOS is so clean it is boring but if that suites you enjoy. As far as Apps go it won't be long until Apps start rolling out for Honeycomb

Ipad 2 hardware improvement but same screen and same os so big deal. Thinner and lighter nice but when looking at screen no different than ipad1

Seriously? You're "surprised" that on the "Android Forums" there's a bias towards an Android device? The fact that this thread exists at all is testament to this community. Yes, there's going to be "fans" on both sides. Some people are able to look at the issue objectively and argue it from a myriad of different viewpoints. Some valid. Some less so. And the end of the day, someone wanting a tablet has a choice to make. Several choices, in fact. Do they buy a Xoom with Honeycomb and an open architecture? Costs more. Do they buy an iPad with a more tightly controlled user experience, but, is closed to modification of that experience? Costs less depending on which model you get. Or do they wait and see what the differently priced Honeycomb based tablets are going to have for features? Cost is variable. So, each potential owner has a choice to make. At least in this thread they can get opinions on both sides.

Are you kidding go say something bad about ipad at macrumors and Apple fanboys will rip their shirts and flop around on the ground.

I've been seing this since last Thursday. I can't think of one technology purchase I've ever made that I defended with such angst... well... maybe when I had Intellivision when everone else had Atari. I'm surprised by the bias I've seen here by members and by others.

Intellivision, awesome awesome awesome. And that football game, light years ahead of Atari and their 4 lineman running in unison up the middle with that scratchy sound :) that brings back great memories.

No doubt. It used to be all about the specs, the crowed over there wanted this and that and suddenly the xoom came out and suddenly to them, it wasn't about the specs any longer :) Because the Xoom had em beat.

Describing Honeycomb is exactly what Apple did years ago, but they did it in a way that infuriated their end users.

Based on history, Honeycomb is going to be most popular OS in history, just give it a little time.

Also comparing a $700+ ipad (one or two) to a $600 xoom is the real way to compare. Your budget ipad has less memory, and no radio for 3/4G, and no carrier subsidy. I'd say people spending that kind of money will go with solid history of Motorola and Google for even less out-of-pocket-money at Best Buy.

The real market is emerging for computing devices, the old market is the music(itunes)-player-closed-system-tablet.

That's the thing that should frighten Apple the most. They have a very tightly controlled user experience. They give you a sub-set of functionality. The "most popular" features, as it were. And for a majority of users, that may be fine. However, the Xoom is going to open up innovation in the tablet space. We have NO IDEA what we're going to see once developers start ripping through the Xoom's and other HC tablet's capabilities. And once we start seeing real innovation and functionality on a tablet, users who are used to the closed environment of the iPad may no longer be satisfied with being so tightly controlled. Apple will then be in the position that HC is today...playing catch up. It's what we're seeing on phones today. And we can thank the developer community for that. The same will likely be true on tablets. Time will tell.

This thread appears to have lived out is usefulness. Anyone who cares to hear more must of bought one or the other and think they made a mistake.

At this point and probably since day one it's all about the platform stupid. I do not think anyone on this forum are trying to argue the merits at this point, it's really a battle of the fanboys.

Now comparing Xoom, LG Slate, HTC will be more productive.

If you don't feel good about your purchase, bring it back!

i know i know - im gonna get kicked for this :D but it is a serious question

i was thinking of getting a ipad1 and then this whole ipad2 situation happened - and then someone was comparing pad2 to xoom10.1

my only real concern with the pad is that it doesnt do flash, and at the moment that might be useful to me

other than that i will just be using said device for sofa surfing :D so lots of forum stuff and also emails etc

thoughts .....hopefully not too much abuse ;)

cheers
dan

ps: i do have an android phone :D

I love this tread. Let me tell you I have supported Android since launch, my entire family is on Android phones. We were the same way with the Palm software. But as with the Palm OS Android has not gotton their engineers in line like apple. iOS plain just work and MOTO has blown a great oportuintiy with me and my purchasing power by putting out a sub-par device. Sure it was great for two weeks. But when placed side by side with the IPAD Moto and Android looses . 4g not released, SDS not workiing, flash (future release) , apps missing. I am not going down the same path I did with Palm and Windows with the Android product. Apple just plain works and that little voice inside of you say “yes he is right” . It has saturated the market (Like windows desktop) to the point where you would be a fool not to get on the train. I give an my family give up, I have decided to be Adam and bite the Apple. I am so tied of explaining to my kid s and wife that this is good, look what it can do or better yet what it will do. The only real advantage to Android is GPS period. Sorry if you fell I’m a apple fan boy; heck I don’t even have an Apple anything yet. But I see the writing on the wall. It’s like buying a Yugo vs a Mercedes .
I have been forcusing on the the Xoom forum , I want Android, I want it to work. Heck I’ve been to Best Buy and the VZ store almost daily. I feel kinda wierd that I am so fixated over this purchase. But I know this will set my purchasing path for at lest the next five to six years. Apple Works, Medical, Airlines, Games, even the U.S Congres is… face it the world is Apples.
Moto you blew a great opportunity, I was there, I waited, I wanted, I’am a Droil lover. Why didin’t you make a unit that worked!
Well I’m still a linux fan boy I’ m just sad Google didin’t see or plan far enogh to slap Apple in the face.
When in all boils down it comes to Size and Speed and this is the bottom line. If you are on the fence just compare the year old outdated IPAD 1 to he Xoom. Then say to yourself “What the heck was MOTO thinking” Yogo to Mercedes” think about it.
Size and speed does matter. The only major deciding factor is Flash & GPS vs proven stable device that people already use. Look to the furture, Medical, Airlines, Schools even the Congress just got approval to us IPADs, at least here in Texas. Netflicks, Fface Bbooks everything works, internet works it all work s Now! Sorry but it is what it is.
While Android provided its first solid and real Apple Killer it came up short. The real judge is how many people buy the Xoom vs the IPAD. Where would you put your investment?

^^

If a person thinks the only real advantage Android has is GPS...I dont know what to say.

About sales of the Xoom vs. the iPad, iPad 2...like with the smartphones, we will never see 1 Android device outsell an iDevice. Its the choice that that makes Android so good right now.

The Xoom being incomplete, not having all the features available doesnt make it a fail. It does work, you can turn it on right? Cant you do the same basic stuff on it any tablet can do? Are any Xoom exploding in flames? If you wanna talk fail, talk about the Notion Ink. THAT launch is a fail.

About the apps, it will get there. Give it time. Some of yall talk like it will have no more apps made for it ever, it will never have the features it has installed...

If the Spare Parts app trick is correct, you can run phone apps full screen on the Xoom. That should be enough until full tablets apps start coming out.

The last sentence about Apple Killer....I think thats the biggest problem with us consumers and what we expect from a product. It doesnt have to be an iPad killer. There is enough pie to go around. Look at the smart phone market, the majority is shared by 3: Android, Apple and RIM. If WP7 takes off it might be shared by 4.

A product doesnt have to be killed for another one to survive. Why cant they just co-exist? Android is all about choice, so why does it have to kill Apple products to survive?

It's about DARN time one of these Android/Honeycomb manufacturers sees the light and realizes it's in a war with Apple for consumer dollars. There is only so much tablet money to go around and if you want to compete with Apple, you HAVE to price aggressively. Too bad Moto did not understand this. If they would have priced correctly, I would have bought the Xoom instead of the Nook Color. That's one less consumer who would have put his money into Moto's coffers
