Help SD card issues with HTC Desire HD

Hello

I wonder if you can help me.

I have an HTC desire HD, which I'm still learning how to use but i've got the basic stuff going. I have had a couple of updates come through that I've accepted, one of which was last night (could be coincidence) and then this morning I've gone to look at some photos in my gallery and it comes up with "Please insert an SD card". This means I also can't take photos or do anything that requires storage I guess?

I've not touched the card since I set up the phone 6 weeks or so ago and I certainly haven't dropped it or even put it down heavily to dislodge anything.

I've tried the trusty turn-off/on again and it makes no difference.

I have no idea what to do.

If anyone can help I'd be ever so grateful.
Thanks
Katie

There are a lot of counterfeit memory cards on the market. Some look very like the real thing.

I once got conned by a Amazon Associate trying to pass off a cheap super-fast Compact Flash by Sandisk.

OK, I should have stood by the old rule of "if it's too good to be true then it probably is!" because when I did a speed test on it, it was appallingly slow.

I phoned Sandisk and they asked me to read off its serial number and they confirmed that people steal their labels and stick them on crappy old memory cards.

I got in touch with Amazon and the vendor was forced into giving me a refund.

Foot-note:
Also I guess you don't know of the bath-tub curve of newly made items?

See image.

When a item is first used it is most likely to fail in the first 3 months and then if it passes that, it'll last for years until it reaches the end of its service life span.

As an engineer it always amazes me how many people think everything they buy should work perfectly from day one. Just doesn't happen in the real world. :)

Try looking for the thread regarding SD card problems a few threads further down. Very common problem at the moment and HTC have confirmed it's due to the recent update. If it's the same as everyone else then the SD card will be fried with no way of getting anything off it. HTC are supplying new cards if you give them a call.

Thanks for the update, I'll give them a try as my 8Gb went west a few days ago (and it is totally SNAFU, not recognised by PC), and didn't know why. Hadn't backed it up either, tried with another (4Gb) and that seems to work fine. Is there any way of getting the files that were on phone when first bought eg pdf files etc.??

Just to widen the issue slightly, does the Desire HD store the photos only on the SD card or does it store them on internal memory at all. Silly question probably but I want to see if I can recover anythng from this duff card.

Sounds like the old Linux/Windows formatting problem.

Hard drives formatted on Linux (Android is based on Linux kernel) place a small partition table at the start of the drive even if there isn't multiple partitions. Windows doesn't, it removes it.

When Digital cameras first came out, if you formatted an SSD on a Windows PC it would no longer be recognised on the camera. I'd often have to place a random data block copy to the start of the SSD so the camera thought it was a fresh unformatted device and allow it to be formatted.

Maybe Android devices still suffer from this legacy?

Just takes a microSD card to be sold that's formatted to the Windows preferred method rather than the standard full FAT32 method?

it is a HTC problem. an update fried your SD card like it did mine. You have to email them for a replacement because the one you have won't work again.

They told me 2 weeks ago my SD card would be with me in 10 days. As I haven't received anything I emailed them yesterday, they replied today telling me it had been posted today :| crap customer service.
