Can't get recovery...says FASTBOOT USB...don't know what is normal

(I think) I rooted my Hero today.

used pre-kitchen and auto root.
lots of errors, but I verified the recovery image (1.23) was on the card, so I think I'm rooted.
moved fresh ROM to SD card.

but now when I try to hold down the home button and press power to enter recovery mode, I just get the HTC boot screen and the word "FASTBOOT USB" in red at the top left.

It seems to sit in this mode forever, and I finally pulled the batt to reboot. everything seems normal, but I can't enter recovery.

Suggestions? (I know I can force it from a shell, but I haven't done that before and before I do, I wanted to confirm this behavior is normal or not.

Thanks!

u00mem9, SouthFLHero, and Rcecarbldr, I have had this issue before and here is a simple solution that helped me. Download "Rom Manager" from the market. Open it and it will give you the option to flash its own Clockwork recovery. Do that. After it has been successfully flashed you may need to reboot (I don't think you need to). Then open Rom manager again and at the bottom it should give you the option to flash the RA 1.6.2. Do that and you should be able to boot into recovery holding the home and power button. Let us know if that works.
