Verizon is buying back Eris's for $132

I am now the "happy" owner of my 5th Eris that I received about a week ago. I called Verizon two weeks ago about my previous Eris having track ball issues (scrolling to the left causing the phone to be unusable). I asked the operator about the option to trade in my phone for $132 and just buying a old moto droid or another phone. She said to give the Eris one more try and use this replacement for a week and if it developed issues, then I could trade it in.
Needless to say, this new Eris has developed problems and I went to the website to trade it in for $132 and now they are only giving $32 for it. I am furious about this because she TOLD ME TO WAIT until now to trade it in. I went into the store today to tell them about this and they just jerked me around.

Any suggestions on what to do next? I am on a 1 year contract that expires in early March.

One thing I've learned from dealing with so called businesses is never trust they will go through with what they've said. Its gotten to the point where I have to record any phone conversation I have, ask the person for their name and operating number, and in some cases ask for a signed written agreement. When you get an illegitimate bill from the insurance company for $15,000 when you were specifically told it will be a $700 co-pay, you will likely do the same.

What are the problems? Early March is just a few weeks away. Can you not get by with this phone, or with another replacement?

You can sell it to Best Buy and get it for credit to a new smartphone.

Buy Back Program

you have to put the retail price in @ around $499.99(main retail, not sure what bestbuy sold it for), and it tells you the following value based on date from purchase:

UP TO 6 MONTHS $250.00

6-12 MONTHS $200.00

12-18 MONTHS $150.00

18-24 MONTHS $100.00

From the copy on that page and the FAQ, that appears to be valid only for products that you buy starting now from Best Buy, not for your own old equipment that you bought elsewhere.

Purchase the Buy Back Program along with your new product.

Its been over two months and I still haven't received my 132 gift card. This trade-in is really with Asurion, even though they are using Verizon's logo on the trade-in website. I'm giving up on the 132. I went to verizon and cancelled my insurance. I'd rather take my chances than give Asurion any more of my money. I'll use the money I save on insurance to buy an otterbox.

Guys I need your help/advise!!!

So did the trade and got valued at $132.00 then nothing but hell from then on.
First card shows up and its for $52.00 after 11 calls with asurion argueing that I did not enter the wrong phone in the computer, I was able to get them to admit they messed up. So they agree to send me the $80.00 difference but im at the "its in the mail" stage.

Problem 2 and the biggest I go to verizon and try to get the 52.00 paper card credited to my bundle account. They say sorry we cant do that. Did I mention 3 weeks before they said I could and not only can I do that but I can buy the X now and they will just put it on my bill. Then when my credit for $132.00 and $100.00 rebate come in just come to the store and we will apply it to the bill.

So now I have a $52.00 piece of paper and a $80.00 piece of paper and the only thing it is good for is to buy stuff at verizon.

So this was what I was thinking but I feel it is shady, even though I am being scamed.
I was going to go into a store and buy something for $132.00 walk out, walk back in and say I want my money back. Do you think it will work? any other ideas?

I don't think you are being shady at all. Yes you are being scammed. I got scammed too. You got scammed by Asurion. But Asurion scammed you with a web site splattered with Verizon marketing that Verizon gave them permission to use, and you, like I, really had no idea that you weren't dealing with Verizon directly. Have you tried to pay your bill on line? When you do, there is an option to use a "gift card". When I started this whole process my plan was to use this gift card to pay my bill that way. That was before I got screwed in this trade-in deal.

Dang... I was late to the game here... I'd love to sell my Eris and get an iPhone or a newer android phone capable of multiple Exchange connections...

In regards to the "early upgrade" thing, I re-upped when I bought my Eris, November 09... so I'm not eligible for upgrade until 7/27/11. I get the $32 quote from the trade-in program. What are my options? Sell on Craigslist or swappa? I do have a crack in the bottom right corner by the power button... not on the screen... but its still some damage.

Im not due for an upgrade until 12/24/11 which i dont quite get since we got our phones in Feb of last year, but I wont complain. I know I saw some people getting their upgrades sooner and I was wondering if I would be eligible. I cannot STAND how sloe this phone it, I wish I would've went with something different instead of the Eris. I am thinking about the Droid X or another android phone. Id like the iPhone4 but the droids do just about everything they do, the iphone does have a few of the apps that i want on the droid for free and i have to pay for them on my phone. i think ill stick with the android market!

Either that or I was thinking about just buying a Droid X from ebay and switching but thatll renew my 2 years then...

IF you add a different phone on a current data/line it will not renew your 2yrs phone upgrade. I bought a fascinate for my wife and added it to her existing Eris line, and her contract didn't renew to another 2 year for the phone. Her line is still eligible for a new phone in 6 months.

Yup, no need to renew contracts by finding a great price on a nearly new phone through craigslist, ebay, or other local classifieds. I just got a practically brand new D2 for $240, activated it for my phone number, and the Verizon system automatically switches it to be my new phone.

Another great reason to buy outside of the rebate offers: No more contracts!!! You will no longer be bound to any provider for any length of time. Gonna be leaving the country for a year (military) and won't need your phone at all? Great! You can cancel your plan and then sign up again when you get back with NO PENALTIES! Verizon starts going to crap once all the AT&T iPhone users' contracts expire and switch to Verizon and you want to switch to another provider, go head with NO PENALTIES (just might need a new phone...)!!! FREEDOM FROM CONTRACTS! :D Let the rest of the goobers keep getting the brand new phones and then selling them for cheap a few months (or less) later.

The value seems to vary, I'm not sure why. I just ran an appraisal and it shows $32. I think just a couple weeks ago, it was the full $132. I have another Eris I picked up from CraigsList for $70. I'll keep checking to see if it goes back up.
