is 2gb enough?

so tomorrow i plan on getting my first droid phone tomorrow.
I've always been with sprint (7+ years) but AT&T is offering me a much better plan and a sweet ass droid phone for next to nothing.
So, here the big question:

How far does that 2 gb plan go...

As long as you don't plan on tethering and start downloading/streaming videos and movies, you are fine. 2GB is good for most "average" users

i dont plan on tethering with my phone but i was most likely going too be downloading and checking out vid's on youtube and such.
Is there a basic rule of thumb on how often i can and should use it?
Maybe an app to check my usage, or any tips/tricks on how to minimize my data usage?

Depending on your viewing habits it may not be enough...

There's no real rule of thumb available to determine future data usage, other than to expect to use 2 - 4x as much as you thing you're gonna use...

is it possible to use a wifi connection instead of using my data plan to avoid going over my 2gb data plan on at&t?

That would be the whole point of wifi.

I don't even have a data plan and I'm on internet all the time for free. You might want to change your wifi sleep policies in the wifi settings though.

Mr. martimus, i see you have also rooted some of your phones. Im not sure as to all the pro's and con's of rooting my phone but since my data plan is limited should that be enough of a warring sign to not do so or does does have its offline advantages too?
(i.e enough to trash the warranty on my brand new phone)

Rooting will allow you to customize the phone to your liking... remove (hide) apps you don't want... and sometimes add features that you do want. In my opinion, and please take it for what it's worth, rooting is not (by itself) going to keep you from exceeding your data bandwidth utilization.

2 GB may be fine now, but in two years it could be bad. Considering the speeds carriers are planning to unroll in the next two years, I would be wary of only 2 GB. 5 GB should personally be the minimum, especially if they are serious about going to 100 Mbps+.

I think it's important to point out that the 2GB plan can go quite far if you use wifi when it's available and only use 3G ( or 4G when it's available) when you can't connect to the wifi.
