New OTA upgrade March 2011

I have an unrooted Hero on Orange and have been offered an OTA upgrade to Build No 3.35.61.3 (am on 61.2 at the moment).

The last few days I have noticed an increase in posts on this site about being offered an upgrade (I assume this or similar) and it having gone wrong. I have done an OTA upgrade before and it went well, but I am worried that this one may be causing problems.

Has anybody installed this yet and if so how did it go and what has changed please? The more answers the better please.

You're not alone - it does appear that this minor update has the potential to cause major headaches. I'm not suggesting that it's a complete crock, but imo you're definitely wise to be cautious.

It will be interesting to see whether Orange customers encounter problems to the same degree that (for example) owners of unbranded handsets have.

Slug, thanks for that. I suppose the problem is bad news always travels quicker than good, and so you are never sure how representative the complaints are. After all on this type of forum you are more likely to hear from those who have had problems because they need help in sorting them out.

I have done the update for me and a few friends all on network three and no problems.but have heard of others who have had problems the update doesn't really do anything to daily use apart from secure login to peep (twitter) so if you are not using twitter no biggy

Well It looks like that if you are a pompey supporter and are on orange like me you dont have any problems. Pompey winning again and stock hero on orange is ok after the update.

I installed this on my Orange hero, with no issues at all. When I asked in my local orange shop what it was for they told me it was for the camera, (stability and focus).
So I don't know as its different to what everyone else believes the ota was for.

I have a bad story and I'm seeking for advice.

I have a HTC Hero (unlocked) and was running HTC Sense / Android 2.1. I believe I had already done an update since 2.1 was originally installed OTA. So, I believe I was running an updated version of Sense 2.1.

Today I was prompted with an offer for another OTA update. I accepted and a black screen with download symbol came on. After that, my phone was rebooted automatically. That moment I had to leave for an appointment and took my phone with me, leaving the area where I had wi-fi connection (through which the updated was being downloaded). I believed it was the final reboot and there was no need for wi-fi connection anymore.

The problem is that my phone is stuck in the first white screen, only with the HTC logo on it. Nothing really happened after that. Buttons don't work. So, to turn the phone off, it's necessary to release the battery. When I turn it on again, it gets stuck in the same white screen with HTC logo.

What should I do? Should I try a factory reset? I would do that only as a last resource. If you guys tell me there is another way to solve this issue, I'll give it a try.

After telling my sad story, I went back to work and found out a relatively easy solution.

Since I was stuck in the first white screen after boot and a hard reset didn't work, the only thing I managed to do was to reinstall HTC Sense rom. I used a gold card and RUU to reinstall a stock rom (which I downloaded from here). It's the same process I've used a couple of months ago to update my Android version from 1.5 to 2.1.

(Oh, of course I've lost all my personal data, which is not nice. But at least I've "unbricked" my phone!)

I'm finding that since the update, my battery is emptying astonishingly fast - much faster than it ever was before. Like, it was full when I went to bed, and 9 hours later when I needed to get up (with the Hero alarm, I might add!), it was off with 0% battery.

I can't see how my actual battery itself could have packed it in so quickly by itself. Seems to me it all started when I did the darn upgrade two days ago.

Pepe - thanks for that. I have still not installed this upgrade, I suppose on the principle that if it ain't broke .......

Any other good or bad stories out there on this one please?
