Yeah warranties are nice but I need insurance because it's more solid, something that covers any dumb thing I do to the phone haha. I mean I've insured phones with tmobile (with the company they go through actually) but this being unlocked and not sold directly by tmobile causes some issues id thing.

most home owners warranties have a computer (electronics) protection plan for a small sum per month (renters insurance too). I have liberty mutual and it was $7 a month to add a $5000 per incident plan with a $50 copay for any device over $500. call your insurance agent and get more coverage for more devices 
By the way, i've made 2 claims on mine and now its like $10 a month. One to replace my entire Macbook Pro fro theft, the other was for my daughter dropping hers in the tub while watching a movie. (and no for all you pervs out there shes 10 and it didn't have webcam so get your mind outta the gutter.) Both came to a "repair cost" of around $1900 each which was paid in full to me by the ins company. Needless to say i purchased 2 new laptops, found a cheap place to fix the others and sold them

I was told that the current T-Mobile insurance that I have on my plan will in fact cover the Nexus 1.

I just signed up for Tmobile month to month plan so I have sim already for tomorrow and they offered me a $5.99 per month insurance plan. I declined it.

you are wrong. you may think you have insurance but you dont. you can pay the monthly charge, but if you said it was for the nexus 1 you would not have been able to get it. if something does happen to your phone and you try to use it you will be denied. you can only warrantee a new phone bought directly through tmobile. you may however be given back the money that you paid towards the insurance because you should have never gotten it in the first place. thats it and that is the facts. sorry to tell you the bad news.

again wrong. sorry but any claim will be denied and whoever told you this was giving you incorrect info. like i said you can indeed sign up for the insurance but you will be denied any calim if you try to actually use it. it is only good for new phones bought through tmobile. sorry again.

Your correct. Any T-Mobile rep can tell you it covers it and you can pay the premiums, but come time to make a claim you'll be denied and that's the part that matters most. Best not to find out the hard way that you've been wasting $6/month plus being stuck with the out of pocket cost of replacing the phone. If you think you really have insurance on the Nexus One, get the third party insurance company's number and call them. If someone there says yes as well, tell them you want something sent to you in writing. That'll be the make/break point.

i am confused about this. do you realize if i was able to get insurance/warranty with tmobile the cost is more than $140 over the two years and they also charge a deductible. and the $50 charge is only for the non defect problems like cracked screen or water damage.
$399 is good enough for me. if the phone stops working i pay only $130. i am not even thinking about the price of the warranty because with tmobile i still have to pay more over two years.......i do however wish i had some kind of loss/theft protection. but i have never lost a cell phone in the 18 years i have had one.

Now I'm REALLY confused... I NEED warranty/insurance basically something that will fix it if its broken and its not my fault... and not charge me hundreds of dollars if it IS my fault.
What is the best solution? I read another thread where they say Asurion covers the N1 and that I can pay $4.79/mo directly to T-Mobile (and I would sign up through T-Mobile).

how do you figure? you say you dont want to pay HUNDREDS of dollars if you break your phone? you'll be paying just that for an insurance/warranty plan. just put the money aside and you'll cover yourself. it's a no brainer. you'll make more money on interest on a bank statement and wont lose out.
other things you can do:
buy a case
TAKE CARE OF YOUR PHONE
dont do anything stupid that may void your basic support from google/htc (ROOTING)
if you just follow these steps, at the end of a couple years youll have more than enough money to buy yourself a nice shiny new phone, and sell the N1 as a used one to subsidize your purchase
that's what i do with all my phones!

I mean I am willing to pay $5 a month, or $100 right now for 2 yrs coverage. But I don't want them to say "great your covered, just fork over $250 and we'll get you a new one"
I am hoping to pay somewhere along the lines of $50 if the damage IS my fault.
And I take GREAT care of stuff... but I got worried when I saw people posting about how their N1 "mysteriously" developed small cracks under the glass. Well maybe not GREAT care because I AM worried about dropping it once. I've dropped my last phone 4 times in the year and a half I've had it.. I heard dropping the N1 once can shatter the glass.
I can't sell stuff... I know I'm losing out but I develop an unhealthy attachment to everything I buy, even a $20 lead pencil, seriously. Maybe theres a clinic for people like me? I sealed myself in with this one because I had it engraved with "AnotherFatalEpic"
Which reminds me... I am also worried that an insurance/warranty solution won't let me get an engraved replacement. I'll pay extra; I will.
