Moto Atrix or iPhone 4

For me, the issue isn't customization. It's the ease with which the user can customize. If you jailbreak any iPhone, you get full access to the file system and can install whatever you want. Including a somewhat useless version of Android 2.2 on the iPhone 3G with a dual-boot. But what I like about Android (having never owned an Android device) is the openness of the devices out of the box. That said, I would be really mad if the Atrix doesn't have an unlocked bootloader, because I would really love to try out ROMs.

You dont have to jailbreak an Android device to do that. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but can you change how the home screens look on an iPhone without doing a dual-boot.

About not having to jailbreak an Android device, that's why I said "It's the ease with which the user can customize."

Also, you can change how the home screens look on an iPhone on iOS after jailbreaking, if this is what you mean.

I did this last night with my girlfriend's iPhone. Sorry for the terrible quality, the Flip HD doesn't do indoor or close up well at all.

And that is why I dropped ATT.

I did the same thing with the Inspire 4G and the iPhone 3gs. Crummy results. I pull 3-8 Mbps consistantly on T-mobile's 4G network.

To be fair, ATT said they aren't doing the HSPA+ speed until March 31st.

Which is better depends on you and what you want. The iPhone is a simpler almost mind numbing experience. Not unlike joining a cult. The Atrix OTH pisses me off because it's the best hardware out with a crappy custom motoblur interface and a signed bootloader making removing that crappy interface difficult to impossible. Best advice if you're committed to choosing between the 2 is to spend some time with both and decide for yourself.

They are both great phones, depends on what YOU want from your phone. I suggest you go to AT&T and play with both of them, see which you like more.
That said I have a friend that owns the Iphone4 and he played with my Atrix and is going to go get an Atrix. It's all about what you use it for, what you need from a handset...go play and decide for yourself.

So if neither phone, would you say the Windows phone would be better?
That's a terrible idea...

If you say what you expect from your phone, we can be of more help to you. Like do you want a basic usage? Great battery life? Are you a power user? Do you like to customize your phone to your wishes? Do you intend to use custom ROMs? etc.. etc..

I've come from an IP4 to the atrix and this is what I think: The Iphone is just a very easy non finiky phone. It doesn't do any one thing great but it does everything very well. The browser is very nice and polished, the screen is amazing and the app store has more to choose from but the android market is right behind it. The iphone camera is pretty good and easy to use but no customization hardly except for changing the background pic. The Atrix so far to me has been pretty good, so much you can do to change it, it has a few quarks but hopefully the next os will fix alot of the things. The iphone 5 is right around the corner so if your on the fence I probably would wait till that comes out to make a decision.

Tomorrow I'll be picking up a new smart phone and I'm torn between the Atrix and iPhone 4. Are there any iPhone 4 ex-owners that switched to the Atrix and have regretted it? I know the camera and display on the iPhone 4 are better than the Atrix... not sure what to do....

I personally like Android more than iOS...... but not sure which route to go.... any help?

There's a few things that I'm iffy about the Atrix

1. Colour representation has been said to look better on the iPhone 4 - the colour yellow apparently on the Atrix doesn't look like yellow

2. The vibrate on the 4 touch keys can't be turned off... is it annoying?

3. The camera on the iPhone 4 is better than the Atrix

4. I've read a lot of people saying their Atrix reboots on its own... kind of a big deal for me

If anyone can elaborate on these points please do so... I REALLY want the Atrix but have read to many negative things and issues with the phone. :/

I've had all of the iPhones except the 4, although I know it very well as a device mainly because I have family and a lot of friends who have one. I just recently picked up an Atrix.

I agree with you 100% about Android over iOS. My phone is so customized, it's unbelievable. Especially after coming from iOS, it feels like freedom. So, of course you get all of Android's perks when getting the Atrix.

However, the camera (at least imo) SUCKS. Like, really bad. At least in comparison to the iPhone 4's.

The display, eh. The Retina is awesome, no doubt. Can't really hate on it. The Atrix display though imo is quite nice. With brightness maxed out, everything pops really well, especially Mario on my n64 emulator! xD

My only problems are as follows and these are extremely debatable because I think I may have a faulty device:

1) I have had horrific battery life. Completely terrible. I have taken the phone out of the charger and in about 20 minutes, I'm down to 90% without doing ANYTHING. I often have to charge it multiple times a day.

Please though, don't let this scare you away from the phone just because I've heard so many reviewers say the 1930 mAh battery is a beast.

2) The lag. I don't know why, but I experience a considerable amount of lag on my lockscreen and homescreen. I'm using Launcher Pro Plus and it just doesn't appear to work as smooth as it should.

3) Blur. I honestly don't hate it, but I really enjoy LP Plus. Customization is just enhanced that much more.

Great phone overall though, I highly recommend it.

1. Not true. Never noticed that myself.
2. Not annoying at all. I never even noticed it actually.
3. The camera is fine for a cell phone camera. Its not going to take incredible pictures, but does take pretty good ones.
4. I have not had 1 reboot.

Hope that helps!

1) Yeah, can't even tell it's there.
2) I actually like that vibrate, personally.
3) The only lame thing is that the Atrix has to use the "for a phone" excuse where the 4 is beasting up high quality photos
4) I've actually had 1 reboot happen to me, but don't be concerned about it considering it seems quite infrequent and probably something that will be mended with a software update.

The Atrix has a locked bootloader... so that pretty much negates any Android advantages of being open. iPhone 4 also has Skype, and Netflix. The dual-core Atrix as a phone is faster on the benchmark tests. But real world usage is not benchmark tests. Despite the 4G claim, Atrix network speeds are slower than iPhone's. The iPhone is also rock-steady keeping WiFi connections, and has a much better camera with HDR sampling. If I were you:

1) Get the HTC Thunderbolt if you're off contract - available tomorrow and unlimited LTE 4G is $29.99.

2) Hold out about 10 weeks for the iPhone 5

But seriously, get the Thunderbolt.

Captaincanada should change his name to captainatrix

The display on the Atrix lacks severely when compared side by side to an IP4, period.

Yeah, the camera is just fine for a cell phone, but the IP4's is better.

As mentioned, lag. From lock to homescreen and with pinch-to-zoom on photos and webpages. It's there SOMETIMES when closing and switching apps, but not always.

Mine has rebooted i don't know how many times. And I get apps force closed multiple times a day.

I'm guessing a lot of this has to do with Android and apps not being optimized for Tegra 2...but do we know when exactly an update is coming? Not a clue.

Now, I'm using LauncherPro, and I love the customization ability over the iPhone. Widgets are okay, but are a battery drain. Android has a "cool factor" over iOS, but iOS wins actual usability hands down. I've had the Atrix 3 weeks now, and will be returning it and waiting to see what the new iPhone brings. I wouldn't even consider the IP4 at this point though, neither should you.

I love my Atrix, and I have had no problem of any kind with it at all. It is speedy, clear, and colors look true to me. I am also a great fan of Android's freedom as well.
I was never an Apple kind of girl so Iphone was never a consideration for me.
If I was torn between two such different choices though, I would wait until I was sure of which choice I wanted before committing to either one.

I haven't had any lag at all from this phone, no reboots, super long battery life and a decent screen. While the screen does not compare to the IP4 it is much better than a lot of screens out there. Everyone I let use my phone compliments it on the speed and overall feel.

The problem with Android is that you can customize it...which means you will get problems like reboots, lag, etc. It is not different than hacking a computer, iPhone, xbox, etc. Once you start messing around with things that you shouldn't it starts having problems. I am using the phone stock and its amazing, no issues. I dont have launcher pro or anything, one day I might. Regardless, the customization beats the pants off an iPhone even if you don't root your phone or throw a ton of apps on it.

Yes the IP4 screen and camera are better but if thats the only reason your going to buy a phone then you should consider buying a handheld camera instead.

I was thinking the same thing about the battery until I realized that the Atrix battery only reads in increments of 10. So as soon as your battery goes to 99% it will read as 90 once it hits 89 it will read as 80. The only time it changes when when you get to 15% at that point it goes down in 5's 15,10,5 then dead.
As far as the screen goes. I'm very pleased with it. I have one complaint and I don't know whats causing it. When I import photos to my phone from my pc or photobucket the photos don't look as crips as they did on the pc or my old Iphone they look more dull.
