Overall I'm pretty happy with my phone as it happens and certainly researched this one more than any other I've had seeing as how it's my first ever contract.

But 10 points, a gold star and an Android badge to you Mr Lecter for being ahead of the game.

Well if it required a PhD, I certainly got that title pretty darned quick because I didn't know anything about Android systems before buying my Desire.

The bottom line is, either you understand tech or you learn...or buy an iphone!

p.s. Can I buy fava beans and a bottle of Chianti with those stars?

I kind of agree with you there. They advertise it as having 584 MB of memory, so most casual users would think that's lots. Of course they don't tell you that you really only have 140 MB or so for your own stuff. In fact, I don't think there's any official documentation (that I know of) that tells you the actual truth about available memory. So a little bit of false advertising on HTC's part.

That said, I can alway manage to install something when I want it, but I do have to keep a constant eye on things.

I'm rooted (thanks mostly to SUroot's posts!) but still running a stock HTC ROM. It's probably inevitable that I'll eventually install a third party ROM, if for no reason other than I can't stop tinkering with things. Hopefully then I'll be truly free from memory contraints.

OK, maybe I did jump too quickly to get a Desire and believed the hype about the phone. One of the biggest incentives was that because Orange were desperate to keep me as a customer the phone only cost me

but you do make a point with tinkerings etc and apple products...though I suspect the 'lockdown' isn't so much to MAXIMISE user whatever...its to keep the customer inline with apples way of doing things....its 'do it this way or piss off' kinda attitude that gets them clawing at the walls the next year when the iphone 'minor upgrade comes out' etc...

I dunno...I like the tinkering on my desire...its a bit of a cock in hand situation that we HAVE to do something to maximise the storage space BUT on the otherside I LOVE the open source way of working compared to say...my old nokia 5800 where it wasn't so closed but it was alot more riskier if you didnt read the FAQ's like 50 bazillion times until your brain swelled so large it would leak from your years into your breakfast one cloudy morning...

I agree if you don't want to extend your geek to your handset, out of the box, the desire is not for you.

I like that about it though.
