Sooo... I bought my phone early yesterday morning (around 9am). I had troubles\problems activating it (because of the the employee screwing up), and didn't end up getting it activated until 5:30pm.

I then went to go see a midnight showing of the movie Paul. On my way to the car, my friend smacked my hand(s), making my phone fly threw the air and land (front-first) on the ground - shattering the screen.

Surprisingly, ONLY the glass is broken. It still is responsive to touch, there is no damage to the LCD, etc.
Has this happened to ANYONE else with ANY phone? I would like to know what my options are. The girl that did it, offered to pay for the repair(s) and I would rather not go straight to making her pay $600 + tax, for something that SHOULD easily be fixed (for a lot less).

EDIT: If I were going to replace it, would this be the part that I need? http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-THUNDERBOLT...937022?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item5d2de4f07e (judging by how I described the damage)

I've had insurance on every device now for a few years and have never had a claim, but reading your story convinces me there is a reason I pay the monthly fee.

Make her pay for a new one. I used to take my devices apart, put on different casings, replace screens, etc., but one thing I learned is once that original factory tight seal is broken, it just never feels the same again. Like a car after an accident.

Also, have you tested the other features of the phone like GPS, wifi, face detection, light sensor, etc.? If these things broke or came loose, you wouldn't know it to look at it of course.

Exactly you have 30 days with no inspection needed. Make the call add it on and be done with it.

Yeah, I put my info in for it, and they just have to "approve" me...
However, there is then the $100 deductible. So it'll cost about $120 to fix the phone (including 2 monthly payments). Another route we may go in: She pays for a new phone, and I give her this one. Then she can either get it fixed and sell it, or she can use it herself, or sell it as is. I am guessing, since the damage is rather minimal, she can sell it quite easily for around $400 (maybe? suggestions?).

I am definitely leaning towards having her simply buy me a new phone, and I give her this one - since it'll be more convenient for me. But she will probably want to go the insurance route, though I don't want to wait 30+ days to get it fixed...

EDIT: of course - when I start talking specifics\prices to her, is when she tries to get out of paying me ;o

If you add the insurance after the original purchase, you can't file a claim for 30 days. Tell her to sack up and pay for it.

That's what I'm doing... Hopefully she doesn't put up too much of a fight, seeing as how she said SEVERAL times that she would pay for it.

But yeahhh... I guess I'll get the insurance from now on :p (never have needed it, before)

Did you at least have a cover on it so it didnt get all scratched up????:D

Happens to the best of us Tumeg. Did you pay full price for this phone???

I would do what many suggested , get the insurance wait 30 days.(make it 31 or 32 to make it look natural and just get a new phone. It was an accident and your friend shouldnt be wholly responsible. For one you probably shouldnt have immediately taken your phone out after a movie. People tend to walk quick after a movie for some reason and arms tend to flail a little. I believe its the person who is walking with their phone that has to be responsible for any damage.(Its not like driving a car you know.lol)accidents do happen but its not your friends fault you dont pocket your phone.(Not getting on you or anyting but just trying to make you see it a different way. What if their was no phone involved and your hands hit, whos fault would it be than that your hands hit????)

You ought to make her feel better and tell her she doesnt have to pay for another. Man up, use the broken phone, practice on it for a month and get a new one, theres no reason someone has to be out $600. The month will go by fast.

For anyone on the fence about insurance, you might want to consider squaretrade.com. I first heard kindle and nook owners talking about them, and have heard of several people who used them and things went very well.

They charge $100 for a 2 year android phone warranty, and have only a $50 deductible. If you change phones sooner they'll prorate and refund the unused portion too.

I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the $168 for Verizon insurance for a couple years, but decided to spring for this instead. If you're like me, and kind of want insurance but may want to spend a bit less they may be worth checking out.

They don't cover theft. Verizon does.

Fine print will get you every time.
