I see your point and even agree that there seems to be too much hype around what we (educated users) think is the least important feature of the phone but evidently the people at htc and sprint think the general public is going to dig the 3d or else they wouldn't be pushing it like that. The 3d tag is going to get every Bubba, Cletus and Harry looking at it while people that know phones and read specs will know what's under the hood anyway. I don't think I'd ever use the 3d aspect of it but honestly who knows what I'll be doing with a phone in 5 years. For that matter, who knows what I'll be doing on my phone in 1 year. The times are changing pretty quickly...

I don't know about the Nexus phones, but I disagree that Samsung makes good hardware. I went through 4 of my last Samsung phones and my wife went through 5 or 6 - all hardware failures. And that was over a period of less than a year. I got so fed up that I bought a Hero for full price and have never regretted going HTC.

Samsung has always made ok hardware but in the last few years they started making great hardware. If they get the support thing figured out they'll be hard to beat.

I'm done with them though.

I've never had a problem with a Samsung phone (it was a flip phone), I've had nothing but problems with my HTC....

Their Nexus and Optimus lines are pretty fantastic. At least this is what the general consensus is with the public. I have never owned either, so I can only comment on what others have said and been polled on.

Well, what have they got to lose, really? It's not like 3D is the ONLY thing the phone is good at. It's a beefed up EVO (which everyone already loves) with 3D features added. If 3D is a flop, well, it's STILL a beefed up EVO, so they invested extra time into the 3D thing for nothing, but it doesn't really make it a LESSER phone. If 3D kicks off, well, they were the first phone to give 3D video and recording to the masses via a phone. I don't even know anyone with a 3D video camera, let alone phone, so again, if it takes off, it's sure to be a smashing hit.

Actually, I don't really use the Evo (or my DSLR for that matter) to view pictures, and the rare times that I do it's just for a quick verification look I'm talking about lag between snapping the shutter, writing the pic, and being ready to take another. I mean, photography is all about being able to capture pics. The hobby called "viewing" is all about looking at pictures (haha).

But seriously, that was what I was referring to -- I encounter no lag between shots on the Evo, it writes plenty fast for the 8mp camera, and consider it's a phone and not a dedicated camera the lack of any significant shutter lag is just downright impressive to me. I've owned dedicated cameras that are slower and perform far worse than the Evo.

I love my Samsung 52" tv... but after falling for the hype and buying the Instinct I will never again buy a Samsung phone.

I bought a Samsung once, ONCE. Never again.

It was a flip-phone from the now defunct company Movistar back in 2001. Even then their dumb phones did not work, an all it had to do was store numbers and make calls.

I will stop telling the story right now because I don't want the nightmares to come back, but basically once you buy a Samsung phone you might has well be selling your soul to the devil cuse those phones are made in hell...

The iPhone doesn't have a 4" screen. Just about the only similarities are the lack of sense, and internal memory.

I am also not quite sure how I was slamming the EVO at all. I was simply questioning how the things that were listed seemed more like an iPhone than a handful of any other phones on the market.

It seems most of the negative comments are directed toward Samsung SOFTWARE/SUPPORT. This is a complete NON-ISSUE as its a GOOGLE PHONE that just happens to be made by Samsung. Their hardware seems solid.

The **ONLY** thing stopping me from selling my EVO to get a Nexus S is the fact that the Nexus S does not have an LED notification light. I used to have an oldschool Nokia brick phone that even had a notification light ffs.

At work I have my giant headphones on listening to music during my whole shift with my phone sitting on my desk by my monitors... the only way I know I'm getting texts or something is that notification light.

I said "at least kinda slamming" and I stand by that statement. You said the Evo is too big and too square and then proceeded to talk about how much better the Nexus S is by comparison. I would say that was "at least kinda slamming" especially when all this was done on the Evo forum. I think this whole subject would've been better received in the Nexus S forum. Not that it's not welcome here (so please don't even start with that reply), it's just you should expect to ruffle feathers of the Evo zealots if you post anything negative about the Evo on their forum.


Looking rather similar to me for those "rounded" corners. I guess the Nexus S is more rounded on the top and bottom edge, and actually looks more like the iPhone 3GS from the side. I think this also shows how painfully close in size a 3.5" and 4" screen is when you're measuring diagonally. Personally, I think the Nexus S looks too much like a Palm Pre, and I think we all know where that formfactor is going/went....

I think we're reaching (if not over the top) a Law of Diminishing Returns when it comes to most features of a mobile phone. Resolution, screen size, pixel density, processor, memory, etc. is just getting ridiculous. For example, I've compared the exact same 720p movie file side-by-side on the iPhone 4 and my Evo, and there's zero difference except maybe the Evo actually looking better because the screen is 1" bigger (which is pretty significant even when measuring diagonally).

I mean, 3D? Are they kidding me? Rather than calling it the Evo 3D they should just get right to the point and call it The Overkill.

I'll be happy with my Evo for another two years, and then I'll have to look at whatever ridiculously over-spec'ed model is available to replace it. Not really looking forward to that....

^I'll be satisfied when a manufacturer comes out with a phone that has the functionality of Android, the refinement and smoothness of iOS, battery life to get me through a full day, and BUILD QUALITY.

Solid, but the quality still lags behind HTC and Motorola. They don't look or feel like premium phones.

Bud, I think you are quoting the wrong person. I never said the EVO was too big nor too square. I own one and I love it. This is mostly why I was confused here... You must have originally wanted to quote the OP?

The only thing I "corrected" you on was the specs that were listed and stating that this fit more of the iPhone 4 profile, which IMO it didn't/

I don't agree with this. I can find a LOT of people who think a phone should just be a dialpad.

That said, good features will stay. Fad features will die out. But manufacturers won't know until they try. Not everyone will need every feature on a given phone. Doesn't mean it's overkill. It's just EVOlution.

I have to agree with you on this one. I had 2 of their phones in the last year that werent smart phones. First one died of a internal non removable battery problem. No longer charged or or turned on at all. Turned out that phone had been discontinued so they replaced it with the newer version of that one. That one worked great for quite awhile and then it too started to succumb to hardware issues involving the antennas. It wouldnt receive texts for 2-3 hours after they were sent and It was right about time when I was eligible for an upgrade when this happened so I stuck it out for a month until I was and got the EVO right before Xmas. I honestly can say Im done with Samsung phones as well.

Checklist for a usable phone.

Does it last more than 10 hours off the charger?
Does it have a readable screen?
Does it have a battery?
Can it hold a signal?
Does it drop calls?


Things that determine an unusable or borderline unusable phone:

Is it made under the branding of Samsung?

And 3D...let me stretch this here even further...ALL 3D is a fad feature.

I'm an avid videophile...LOVE movies. Hate theaters and hate 3D. Frankly, I don't see a purpose for either. I have a home theater -- why would I want to go out in public, pay through the nose for tickets and snacks, and watch a movie with 200 strangers annoying the crap out of me while I'm trying to watch a movie? Now, why would I want to do all that and deal with the nuisance of 3D, too? I already wear glasses, why would I want to wear a second pair of glasses to watch a movie full of gimmick shots/scenes of things poking me in the head?

99.9% of the people I know who own iPhones, Evo's, or any other video capable phone don't even know how to get a movie on the phone, and they sure as heck aren't going to sit down and watch a movie on their phone for 2 hours (if they're battery can even do that). So, really, what's the purpose of 3D on a phone?

It's a rhetorical question -- Because HTC can, that's why. That's the very definition of overkill. It's not needed, but because you can do it, you're doing it. You don't need a Ferrari to commute to and from your 9-5 job, but if you had the means to get one and drive it for that commute, you would. Hell, I would. That doesn't mean it's not stupid....and overkill.
