    I just got the Xoom!

I was seriously considering the iPad2 but couldn't bring myself to do it. I kind of want an apple device just for variety/comparison sake but I had to have the xoom.

Right now I'm driving (passenger seat of course) to philly so I have 4 hours there and back to play. Tuesday I'm flying from baltimore to phoenix and phoenix to hawaii so it will be fun to see how it handles after extensive use. Also extremely interested to test battery life.

Now its time to dig through all the awesome threads you folks have already written!

    @Rob

I'm one of the road warriors out there for the time being, commuting every week between LA and the Silicon Valley, with the occasional short business (or personal) trip. The Xoom has so much functionality, esp. with my BT keyboard (ironically enough, from Apple :)) that lately I can leave my laptop on short trips and take the Xoom only.

Tonight I'll be loading up my XOOM with a WHOLE lot of stuff. Music, Movies, Books from Google Books, Games, Apps, and whatever else I might want. Then I'll:

    • Charge my battery to 100%
    • Wait until my Phoenix to Honolulu flight takes off
    • Turn on my XOOM and start playing
    • Hourly, record what I've been doing with battery status

I'm curious to see how long this bad boy will last. I'm not sure whether or not I'll have in-flight Wi-Fi but obviously I won't have GPS which would normally affect battery life. Although GPS is something I'd likely keep toggled off unless I needed it in a tablet scenario.

ZZzzzzpt! Reset - I was thinking more like My Track and maybe My Maps Editor by Google (but I'm not seeing that one in the Market right now... ???) -

My Maps Editor by Google ~ Android Application v1.1.6 By Google Inc. | Travel & Local

For those unfamiliar with My Tracks -

I guess (think) the My Maps layer is visible now in Google Maps - so the editor may be no longer supported....

    OK - looking for equivalent...

edit and ps - OK, this illustrates the idea - a geo-tagged picture embedded in a contour-layered map with a GPS trail - http://blog.twoknobbytires.com/2010/03/using-google-android-phone-to-map.html

Rather unrelated, but holy crap I left Arizona to go to Honolulu the same time he did, and I brought an iPad (which I no longer own, since I sold it to buy a Xoom! :p).

As some comparison for whenever Rob gets back:

I charged my iPad almost every night, since I could. I used it tethered to my Android phone for data/GPS and used it for navigation a few days. Never had any issues with the battery. I think the lowest it got after a day of navigation+I<3Radio streaming was around 50%

The main issue was that the iPad has a big issue with some WiFi networks that require additional authentication via a browser. It didn't detect that I was logged in, and I either had to switch wifi networks or disable/enable wifi to get connected to the internet.

    Bear in mind that:
    -This was an iPad 1
    -GPS was coming via Bluetooth
-Data was coming via WiFi via Android phone

So my battery experience may differ from similar usage on a Xoom.

So I'm not sure we had a whole thread yet about anyone using the Xoom while they were traveling. My husband and I are visiting family this weekend, an 8 hour car trip away. My Xoom has been *so* useful, and I just wanted to share.

I use my Droid2 as our main GPS, but it was really nice to be able to pull up the map on the Xoom and look ahead at traffic, or look for places for gas or food, while still having the main GPS on.

My husband forgot his iPod, so we streamed his music from home from the Pogoplug. I'm trying to move away from having my iPod too (I love it, just too many things to carry around) so it was nice to use the Xoom for all our music. We hit once spot with no signal for about a half hour, but otherwise it was great.

I left my Nook at home, as well. I do prefer reading on the e-ink screen, but for traveling, the Xoom does fine. Got some reading done.

Also just surfed around on here, Facebook, other forums, and even did some homework! We watched some shows on Netflix, played Mario Kart on the N64 emulator (holy crap it's hard to steer!).

The other thing is pictures. I was initially flummoxed on how to get pics off my camera, but I ended up buying an eye-fi card. I use the mobile hotspot on the Xoom, and the pictures automatically upload to my home PC, and to Photobucket, so I can look at them through PocketCloud, Photobucket app, Pogoplug, or eye-fi's mobile site. I'm thinking I might change them to upload to Flickr, which I think will automatically sync them to the Xoom, right?

So, just wanted to share my experience, being a first time tablet owner. :)

Edited to add: Forgot battery! I had been using it at home before we left without charging which was a bad idea. I ended up plugging it in in the car (no car charger, just an adapter I got cheap on 1saleaday.com a while ago) with about 2 hours left to go. Considering it was being used non-stop the whole time and I turned the brightness way up when it was sunny, not bad, I think.
