Root Restore from nandroid backup

I created a backup of my stock 2.1 using the backup feature in rom manager and I flashed a custom rom to try it out. I wanted to revert back to my stock setup, but when I try to restore from the backup file it completes the restore and i reboot, but it doesn't get past the unlock screen. It boots up, show the unlock screen for 30 seconds or so and it says it is searching for a signal. Then the screen goes off for 30 seconds and comes back on and does the same thing. I left it for 15 minutes and it never gets passed the unlock screen (can't swype the screen to open phone)and I eventually have to reboot. Is there a problem with my backup file or could I be doing something incorrectly?

Your nandroid backup does not save your 2.1 kernel. You have to flash back to stock with ODIN, then boot in to recovery immediately afterward and hit "reinstall packages". The update.zip package from CWM should remain in your internal SD allowing you to bypass the root process. Once you are back in CWM recovery, go to backup and restore, flash your backup, and you should be right back to where you started right before you flashed a custom ROM. If you are doing a return to T-Mobile, make sure you wipe everything off your internal SD, and go through the unroot process.
