Hi,

I have a database driven website written in PHP. The programmer now has left the project :( and I need to move ahead on my own and:

  1. Adapt the site to smartphones
  2. Develop an Android app
I don't have any real experience in programming but I have built a few simple sites in PHP many years ago and think I can do the necessary changes to adapt the site to smartphones. The problem is that I don't know what changes that is needed.

If someone could help me to get started in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

The site is presently only made for PC browsers. What is needed to adapt the site to smartphones as well? Should I add "styles" (or whatever it's called) for smartphones or should I change the original settings for the site to adapt it to smartphones? What are the specifications needed for smartphones?

Regarding an Android app, where do I start? Since it is a multi page, quite complex site with a large database I suppose that Google's App Inventor is out of the question and that I need to learn Java? I want the App to function exactly in the same way as the website. How do I get started? Any tips or suggestions for books etc are welcome.

Many thanks,

Ber

Better ask yourself first if you are really in need of an android app for your site or do you only need a website style optimized for mobile browsers.

A mobile optimized website can be made by sending users to a specially prepared website whenever a mobile browser is detected. this can be done with php/css/javascript

If you really need a android app you might also want an app for all the other smartphone OS' out there. Thats going to be a lot of work.

Anyway, here's a good starting point for learning android: The Developer's Guide | Android Developers
