Root kernel before or after rom?

You can find your current Kernel by going to "Settings", scroll down to "About Phone". You'll find your current Kernel listed there.

You'll want a Kernel that works with your ROM. You need to know if you have a SENSE, or AOSP ROM. Then make sure the one you pick is made for your ROM.

There are much more informed folks out there than I. Hope this helps...

OK so do flash rom then kernel or kernel then rom? Also how do I now if the rom already has a kernel and which kernel will work with which rom? I'm looking to improve battery life.

The ROM always includes a kernel. As a result;

-If you install kernel first, then ROM, you're using the stock kernel included with the ROM, and you wasted your time with the custom kernel install.

-If you install the ROM first, then the custom kernel, you'll be using the ROM with the custom kernel.

ALWAYS install the ROM, boot to make sure it works, then install your kernel after.
