Root Flashing kernels separately from ROMS

Can someone please clarify why we have to flash kernels separately from ROMS on the Thunderbolt? Is this an issue with Clockwork recovery? In the past I have owned the original Droid and kernels could be included directly in the ROM, and the Droid X where we never had to worry about kernels since we couldn't replace them anyways. I am hoping it is a temporary issue and eventually we wont have to use fastboot or PG05IMG.zip files for kernels, as it becomes a pain when reverting back to previous backups.

Anyone care to shed some light on the subject?

Thanks

i flashed a kernel using CWM with no issue just a couple hours ago.
maybe you had no issues, but are you certain it worked? is the new kernal listed in your phone info? did the developer provide a .zip that was intended to be flashed in CWM?

what is the advantage of flashing kernels
kernals can be tweaked just like the rest of the rom. they can be under or over volted, among other things,to make them bigger/better/faster/stronger :D

I'm certain it worked, it shows clearly in software information. Also, per his post on XDA:

You don't really. Most roms will have a kernel that comes along with it, most often optimized as best the rom dev could do. But you can also flash a kernel by a "kernel specialist" that will tweak other settings you might want. Either way, it's a little early for this since everyone is focused on OC and linpack scores for some reason. I'm just kicking back for CM7 with whatever kernel they pack with it, unless it doesn't include smartass. Then I flash another kernel.

my advice is to avoid rom manager. use clockwork recovery, its very similar to using Amon_RA.

you flash a kernel just like you do a rom,but dont do any wipes.

-place kernels .zip file on root of sd card.
-boot into clockwork recovery
-flash zip from sd card
-reboot

:)

Some developers recommend wiping cache and dalvik before flashing a Kernel. It really doesn't hurt and it removes a step if the Kernel isn't stable. If you wipe first and it's buggy you can try a different kernel versus going back into CWM and wiping then trying the same Kernel again.

It's all good. I figured you knew what was up, but I just wanted to make sure cmotion knew what to wipe

Oh, I know what to wipe alright... :p

...not sure where I was going with that one. Anyway, my main reason for wanting to flash a new kernel is to try to improve battery life. It's not as bad for me as a lot of people were making it out to be (or maybe I'm just more understanding about the freakin' super computer I carry around in my pocket?), but if I can get a good undervolting kernel to help with some battery life that'd be awesome. Has anyone tried Adrynalyn's newest (v2.0) kernel? I see Worm you're on Das BAMF, how's battery life there? I've downloaded setCPU to turn down the frequency with the screen off, but I'm not sure I'm noticing much of a difference, so I wanted to try maybe flashing a different kernel. With that one I mentioned, I think it's set to smartass by default, which I've heard may help with making the battery last longer? For me personally, I see no need to overclock this thing yet, especially coming from the Eris (which has AMAZING devs who helped make the phone usable for so long after EOL)... I'd just like to squeeze a little bit more out of the battery, if possible.

i unplugged early this morning and just a lil bit ago was at 73%... its amazing how much longer the battery lasts when you dont really use it :D i normally have talked a couple hours on it,played some games, and repeatedly checked email and the forums.

i was on das_bamf with the supplied kernel, set to smartass and no profiles. if you dont play with it constantly(like i normally do) im pretty impressed with the battery in this setup.

i just flashed the das de-sensed,ill see how it does there :)
