Gorilla Glass yes or no

Someone already shattered there Thunderbolt in a different forum and it didn't even hit something hard like cement my bet is NO Gorilla glass, I know the EVO is very fragile as well.

The bigger the screen the more fragile it is, IMO, no matter what kind of glass it is.

I had seen pictures of the Thunderbolt on this forum where a phantom skinz protective film had been applied, and you could see ripples on the screen, and people were turned off by that. But honestly, when I hold my phone a certain way (without any screen protectors on it at all) I can see ripples. It's not perfectly flat at all. If you look at it directly, it looks perfectly flat, but if you look across it, you can see that it isn't. Maybe that adds strength or something, who knows?

Gorilla glass may be more shatter resistance to plain old glass but it's still glass and it'll still shatter when dropped. You've got to accept that you're trading off shatter proof(ness) to get a capacitive screen.

I've got a few older resistive touch screen devices that can take a beating and then some and the screen won't shatter. One is a 10 year old Cassiopeia that still looks practically new. I still use my Omnia as a backup when my Incredible went down (twice) and I'm keeping it on standby if my thunderbolt goes down.

When I tap on the screen of my Thunderbolt, it feels plasticky like the Gorilla glass on the Motorola Atrix. When I do the same on my wife's iPhone, it feels harder and sounds like rapping on regular glass.

Same here. I tapped both TB and Droid X and it felt hallow and plasticy. Then I tapped the iPhone's screen and it is hard.

Needless to say, the iPhone will crack very easily. Co-worker dropped hers and it shattered. Dropped my Droid X all the time and there wasn't even a scratch.

Well, I am on my 3rd Thunderbolt since the day it launched. I dropped the first one on my ceramic tile floor. Big crack on the side of the screen. Filed a claim with Asurion. Got the replacement and dropped it 2 days later in the SAME SPOT in my kitchen. I sobbed. This time it had huge spider web cracks and pieces of glass missing. So, I would say this glass is nothing special.

I hate cases and prefer to go naked with my T Bolt. So, I now never take my device into my kitchen. (I stop at the sofa and lay it down like an infant.)

When walking outside it's always in my purse or a very deep pocket. I am MUCH more careful with it than any other phone I have every had. It's VERY FRAGILE!!!!

I am typically a pretty careful person. I sobbed when I dropped it a second time. My fault of course but 2 Xs $99.00 (deductible) later and now dropped from insurance I caution you all to BE VERY CAREFUL!!

Get BB insurance. 10 bucks/m no deductable. Ofcourse u had to buy it there and u get 1 month aftr buyn it to sign up 4 it befor offer is no longer good. The guy at BB sais if i get a scratch chuck it at the wall n get a new 1 :)

Nope not entirely true. Read the fine print. They don't simply replace the phone they will try to fix it unless they determine it is not repairable. I might be wrong but that is what I got from their contract so I canceled it.

If its Gorilla Glass it is the kind without the G and L. My first phone came out of the package with a scratch. Had it replaced. The second phone I placed in my pocket while jogging. I just took off the screen protector to have it replaced because of dust issues.

So i was jogging, I had ear buds in. The earplugs came unplugged. It wasnt even 3 seconds. I stopped to plug it back in. Took it out of my pocket and the plug scratched the damn screen.

This glass is pure junk! I hope They know this. So I bought a replacement glass and installed it myself. It was 49.00 Dont get one on Ebay. They are way expensive!

Wasnt too hard to replace either.. I thought just maybe because the phone was bigger and heavier that was why so many were cracking when dropped. But now. I think the glass is just crap! And so is the insurance plan. Best to buy a replacement and keep it handy! You will need it. Maybe not today or tomorrow. BUT THE NEXT DAY! lol

Agreed. Just went through that hassle with my D1. Took it in a couple months ago cause the charging ports wast messed up. They gave me a loner phone and then 2 weeks later my original phone came back fixed. Then about 3 weeks ago the screen smashed.....don't ask me how, long story. Took it in and they gave me a loner phone again while they sent it off. I figured (and was kind of hoping) I would get a new phone or money to upgrade but last week they sent it back, fixed (2 week turn around)!

So then last Friday I went in and used my wifes upgrade to get the TB. She work at Best Buy so I got the InvisiShield right away and the protection plan again.

Sorry for the long post, just thought I would post up my experience with the BBY plan.

@shadowdude777

I can't believe you are still using that quote in your signature line LOL :D

But OT...All screens being used today are shatter and scratch RESISTANT.

It also says I'm using CyanogenMod 6, but I moved to a GB ROM a long time ago. I should probably move up to CM7 now though, since we finally have it on the OG Droid.

My mgr has a dinc and when he dropped it on the floor the corner part of the screen cracked. I thought gorilla glass doesn't crack?

I never heard of gorilla glass until Tuesday of this week when I dropped my LG G2x from the height of a dining room table on a laminate floor with foam underlayment and when I picked it up I was pretty pissed that my one- week old new condition (but bought used), smartphone now has a shattered screen. :( It was obvious that it landed right smack dab on the bottom right corner by the way the glass was shattered in tiny spiderweb cracks right at that corner spreading out to larger cracks through the whole screen. I had ordered screen protectors and a hard rubber-coated case from Ebay that hadn't (and still haven't) arrived yet, but I had a cut-to-size temporary screen protector on it that kept the screen pieces in place and the phone is still working fine. No damage whatsever on the case corner though. Really sucks. So in looking for a replacement phone I saw a G2x listing highlighting the gorilla glass feature, but since the phone still works fine and the separate underlying LED or LCD screen is fine with no bleeding or dead pixels, it made more sense to buy a replacement OEM original new digitizer screen for $70.00 shipped instead of another phone. Sorry for the long post, but gorilla glass seems to be pretty fragile on this particular phone and thought I'd share that experience.

I bought my G2x replacement screen on Ebay for $70.00 shipped from a U.S. seller but saw them for a lot less from China. Just don't know about stuff being legit from China, but then again, that's probably where the U.S. seller got his to sell :(. Where'd you get your replacement?
