News Speculation on the NEXT Froyo Update

Well... if it's true, nobody can say that Samsung and Sprint are ignoring us anymore.

It still remains to be seen if we'll ever get gingerbread, but... we're not being ignored.

True... I'm just wondering if EB13/EC05 was a "quick fix response" to the hate mail on all the forums. The problem is that the epic hardware is hard to beat, but when you look at the other phones running Froyo and above, without a performance lag, well...it leaves a lot to be desired

I don't want to root, so I hope the next patch (if you believe the origional post) or whatever, gives us a stable, functioning FROYO with all the bells and whistles !

Honestly i accept we probably wont be updated past froyo to gingerbread. But I'm all for maintenance updates. This phone is awesome enough with froyo. I played with a nexus s and it seemed buttery smooth. But I really don't think you would notice much of a difference besides a different user interface. Whats that matter when we all use a different home launcher anyways o_O

Today a sprint tech *from cust service via phone* said they would have a OTA sometime in late june/july, but they could not tell me anything more. This came after being advised to not update my new replacement phone to 2.2 until this new update came out.

new replacement ? As in REFURBISHED? LOL
That's what they wanted to send me after I forced them to tell me the truth.
They kept saying NEW. To them a refurb is new if you did not own it...LOL

I have no doubt they are refurbs but hey as long as the dang thing works I'm ok with that. With a choice between a refurb and one that doesn't work I'll take the refurb! Just got the Epic in Feb. and renewed the contract so a bit costly to cancel and go to verizon with 3 phone lines

IF we are going to ever have Gingerbread, I'm sure they're already working on it.

Gingerbread is available for the Nexus S already, which means most of the heavy lifting has been done for the hardware support.

You need to know that the Nexus S will be PURE GOOGLE. It will not have the added bloatware from Samsung/Sprint. So they say. That being true or rumored will make Gingerbread a pure system unlike 2.1 and 2.2 where Samsung/Sprint got to add all the crap half of us did not want.

As far as Epic getting Gingerbread? I really don't see it happening....
When I had my Hero it was all the buzz about getting Froyo after the 2.1 but that never happened.

My point was that much of the hard work of building the hardware specific device drivers to support the hardware in the Galaxy S line is likely done, since Nexus S already has 2.3, and is extremely similar from a hardware standpoint.

I'm not really talking about all the other software put on top of android, but rather, the software that goes underneath android.

Just talked to Sprint.... All the EPICS are on backorder
They stated that I would receive either a new phone or the new update whichever came first.
I'm okay keeping this one if the update repairs the issue.

I did get a garantee via email that I would receive a new phone if the update did not fix the issue or a credit for a different phone if mine can't be replaced.

That said.... When I asked the tech about Gingerbread, He paused and said," I don't see that happening being they can't get 2.2.1 to work with the EPIC."

Which to me means, It will be a cold day somewhere not close to here before we get it.........LOL

I was told last saturday when I was getting a replacement ordered that it was on backorder as well. BUT my new phone came TODAY!! I got the USPS tracking code emailed this morning, went out to run errands and when I got home it was on my porch :D. That being said it may come sooner than you expect!!

U might do well to check this statement out, he states that Gingerbread is headed our way..
Android 2.3 upgrade list: Is your phone getting Gingerbread? - Computerworld Blogs

That would be awesome but seeing it stated as early as March or April
I'm inclined to think not...
Please understand the words "All signs" and "COULD" = Speculation, unsure... Snow balls chance....LOL
This does not nor will those words garantee us Gingerbread....

Sorry, I need proof beyond speculation...
