Root Important post by P3droid (For GB users especially)

Not open for further replies.
P3droid posted some information on the coming lockdown from Moto and Vzw. Please read this and decide where you want to go from there. I for one am SBF'ing right now.

Some Food for Thought - Bootloaders, Rooting, Manufacturers, and Carriers

Edit:
The gist of the post is that VZW and Moto are actively going after those of us running non-approved software and even root users. This is probably the cause of the Wifi tether issue.

Again, please read this folks!

Edit:
The post has been updated.
Thanks

You mean you are sbf'ing back to ROM'd and rooted 2.3.340, our stock 2.3.340?

I'm SBF'ing back to 340 and going to Liberty 2.0. Didn't understand what you meant by ROM'd.

@Gunther: I barely tether; I've used it for my some people in my office (we have a contract with VZW although my DX is my personal phone) when they couldn't get data on their Blackberries, Iphones, etc.... However, if I PAY for unlimited data, I should get unlimited data. Thank God I got a one year contract.

Can't say I didn't see this coming. It was only a matter of time. Its very unfortunate though. That being said android is coming a long way and tbh I wouldn't mind running a stock non-rooted gingerblur. But android is all about open source. . . But then again this isn't sourcing from google I guess

Something like this wouldn't come from google. If I'm not mistaken google has stood in favor of rooting devices.

OK doesn't sound good, however..... I never owned a OG Droid so I have never experienced an unlocked bootloader. I have really enjoyed what the devs have done with the X so I feel comfortable in assuming that these brillant devs will find a way to do some sort of majic however limited to make our smart phones way better than stock. If it's the free tethering that scares the carriers so much, (which I find ridiculous) then I say let our devs help the carriers lock down the tethering and free up the bootloader in return.

You know we are not talking about curing cancer here. Just a bunch of people trying to have fun with smart phones.

It is sad to see this happening. I do not use wireless tethering(not condemning those that do, just my personal preference).
I am disheartened to see that these artists(devs) may not have this outlet to showcase their talents anymore. I enjoy swapping ROMs and themes. It keeps my phone fresh and new to me. I appreciate the time, thought and effort that these folks put into their craft and hope that this is not the end. I got into rooting and theming knowing the consequences that may happen. I never thought that doing this would paint a target on my back for these corporations to attack. I am still unsure which path to take but know that "The Man" will always win....

I didn't see this post. Steven, please combine the threads.

On topic:
These carriers are greedy as hell. Why do you want me to pay again for data when I'm paying you for unlimited data already? How does that make sense..
Maybe Sprint will offer a way out. The big two are getting out of hand.

You're not paying to tether to another device. I tether here and there, but I can see the carriers stance on the tethering issue...I just don't want to be blacklisted for rooting my device...a device already locked down to what can be done to it.

I don't see the point. I watch gaming streams on my phone and can use up (very easily) a lot of data. However, it pales in comparison to the data I use on my PC. The point of the tethering ban is not because you're paying/not paying for the feature. It's to limit data usage.
The question is, if you signed a contract to pay $30 for unlimited data, why should you be limited in the way you use that data?

It comes down to $$$ pure and simple. A while back, there was an article detailing the future of the cellular companies. Previously to now, they were content providers at cost. You want GPS? $9.99/month. Streaming video and music? $4.99/month. Tethering? $29.99/month. And so on. Now, with the advent of powerful smartphones, the phone can do this all natively. The carriers are in danger of becoming wireless Internet providers, especially if/when voice goes to VoIP. There is little to no extra revenue streams by just being an Internet provider.

Secondly, I don't think it is just VZW, Moto, AT&T either. I think Google (yes Google) has their hands in it as well, either by choice or force. With Google not sharing the source code of Honeycomb and stating their intent is to control the fragmentation of Android, they are slowly closing the OS. It may not be as closed as iOS, but the days of total openness could be gone.

Needless to say, I am SBFing back to 340 as we speak. At this time, I am going to remain rooted and use LPP on top, as I think that runs the best on rooted/stock.

That's precisely the point. I was arguing about this a few weeks ago here on AF. That's the goal of these carriers, to charge us for the features they used to charge us for before the advent of smartphones.
