Help Can Verizon 3g really be this slow?

Denver
I just got my thunderbolt and have been both disappointed in the fact that I don't get 4g at my house, and that 3g is so damn slow. I am in the Denver metro area, have a full 3g signal, and am getting 160k dl speeds and about 500k up. Even in the 4g area I wondered into, I only got about 4meg down.

I thought LTE was supposed to be super fast..

hmmmm

the issue is they have a 4g signal at the store, which makes it impossible to get a real impression of the service.

Hmm, I would call VZW customer care. I'm pretty sure they can look into how strong a signal u should be pulling down in your area.

Also I would go to store that your saying is lit up with a strong signal. If u can pull some good speed over there, you'll know its the signal in your area. If u can't, then you'll know its your device causing the issue.

In my experience, VZW's 3G has been pretty fast. Just ask any Incredible, Fascinate, or Droid X owner...those are all pretty fast phones, and they're all 3G devices. I've owned all 3 and they were all very speedy.

I'm a droid x owner and there 3g sucks hardcore. I can show full bars in some areas and still only pull 100-200kb down. It's pretty slow. Just depends on the area...some places i pulld own over a meg a second but normally its pretty slow.

Are u going by a speed test, or by every day performance? Because a speed test doesn't really hold any weight. My x was fast, the web was fast, YouTube loaded up pretty quick, and the battery life was awesome. So I can't agree with you on that. I'm in NYC, so in all honestly, we get really good coverage out here...

Is the TB faster, ofcourse it is! It houses a new snap dragon, and it's powered by LTE, so I can't say they're even close to even. But the x was still a very fast day to day device.

When I had my Droid 1 on Verizon I pulled 1.8-2.2mbps DL in most of western Massachusetts, however, in southern Vermont and upstate NY I only got 400-900kbps. It's all in the area. If the network back haul hasn't been upgraded to fiber then it doesn't take many users to reach the bottleneck.

Give it a few months, VZW is doing a massive build out, more so then any other carrier I've ever seen. If you have SOME LTE in your area then by the summer/fall it should be much stronger.

I live a mile from the tower in my town, heck I can see it out my front door. It always says I have full 3G service, but I have never gotten above 200 kb/s down on any device. I guess it's because they haven't done many upgrades in this rural area in a few years.

Yea, you may have awesome signal reception but the back haul on those towers could still be using copper instead of fiber. Also, if you go to your settings somewhere in wireless & networks OR about phone you can see if it's EVDO Rev A or Rev 0. BIG difference in speed.
