So whats the overall concensus? is everyone keeping root? SBFback to stock? What seems to be the best course of action at this point?

I dont want to get smaked with huge charges (even though I dont use tether) But I sure do love my GB... I had way to many force closes on OTA stock froyo :( I cant go back no way :(

I have SBFed before back before OTA froyo came out but I sure dont want to have to do it again.

But I will if I have to :(

It would be illegal for Verizon to charge you because you're rooted.

It would NOT be illegal for Verizon to charge you because you're tethering outside their contract.

Root all you want. Mod your system all you want. Just don't tether unless you're paying for it.

This....therefore i will continue to run rooted as well, i do not use my tethering therefore i am not too worried

I'm unrooting. I only use wireless tether once to see if I could. I'm not running any custom roms or such. I currently only use three rooted apps, TI Backup, Button Savior, and ShootMe. From what I hear, with GB you won't need root to get snapshots.
I'm really going to miss TI Backup and Button Savior. But I would mis even more the big bucks I would have to spend to get a new phone with any carrier if my phone shot craps and Verizon wouldn't replace it because I was rooted.

I would say that is the biggest risk of being rooted, that you have voided your warranty. It is everyones choice to what they want to do, but from the sounds of it if you have already rooted they know you have and if they start voiding the warranty's it does not matter now if you unroot now or not.

If Verizon was to ask me why I rooted it was for the apps and themes (and even ROMs) that I could put on my phone. None of which are against my contract with them. If there were able to put out a phone that we could theme, overclock/undervolt, back-up apps, back-up the whole system to reload later and remove the bloat they put on it I would not want to root.

i agree with most on here. I'm not changing anything i do to my phone. I enjoy rooting and i don't use wireless tether either so i could care less. This is a scare tactic. VZW knows that if they leak info like this out that a lot of people will be scared into going back to stock..then guess what They spent no $$ having to get those people to stop tethering. I"ve seen this many times before in other technologies involving hacking.

From what I read in the original post ( and everything else just seems to be speculation) is currently they only way they have to know if you are rooted is if they try to push a system update and it fails. I would like to avoid that. I don't believe there is any spyware currently loaded in froyo that is calling home if you are rooted. But I do think it is coming, at least to GB when it rolls out.

The thing is, if you were rooted up until 3 days ago, VZW probably already has you in said database.

we wouldn't know if they pushed an update and it failed on our devices. B/c it failed, we would never see it on our end. People that don't root, wouldn't post about an update. And not excepting the update wouldn't cause it to fail.

Actually, I do recall a recent post (within the last two weeks) where someone was talking about an update they received and asked if it was GB, but they were confused b/c they were still showing 2.2.1. This could have been it. I have several coworkers that have DXs but aren't rooted. I'm going to ask if they have had to accept anything over the air.

One thing no one seems to have thought of too, any chances this is all another dev hoax a la nenolod and the cracked bootloader. I mean last week we were all in a tizzy for 2 days b/c we thought we had finally gotten in. Now, this week, we find out we are being shut out even more. I mean I thought Moto was still waiting to release a statement about the dev community and a solution to locked bootloaders....

I'M CONFUSED!!!!

If they can tell when they try to push an update to your phone, don't you think they could do the same thing when there is not an update? Verizon could do the same thing as when they try and push an update to check and see if you are rooted. From the carrier standpoint they would have to know that just checking if updates were taken or not would not catch everyone. I think in P3Droid's update to his post he said if you were rooted on Froyo they know. Bottom line to me is if you are rooted you have done nothing wrong and if you are not using a service in which they have a plan for and expect you to pay for it nothing will happen because you have not done anything to void your contract and they still want your money!

Staying rooted, screw em... If Verizon or Motorola don't want leaks or rooted materials out there, they should stop developing and shut down their business. Development is key to survival, and field testing works very well to find bugs. Accidentally "leaking" ROMs and such may not be as accidental as one might think. There is an air of "danger" and if you are "brave enough to try it".....
I can just see how the devs are handling this; Laughing their asses off because they wrote this threat and sent it to P3 so he would leak it to all of us. This way, they go on to the forums, look at the reactions and make decisions from that. Good job to all of you who knee-jerked out of this upgrade, you just make the corporations stronger.
This, of course, is my $0.02 YMMV
I have seen this before, anyone heard of a BlackBerry storm1? The EXACT SAME issue came up when BBM5 came out, people freaked out and reverted to the original BBM, and a week later, a release was made officially which ran worse than the leak. Funny thing, no tracking was done, blackberry messenger did NOT get shut down and life went on. If you really are worried that Big Red will track you and penalize you for running a leaked ROM, go with T-mobile, or Sprint etc. Or, you could go back to "Ma Bell" and go landline... Life involves risk, those who refuse to take chances are already dead inside.

Staying rooted and watching. If they mess me over, by limiting root access, I might as well go over to the Iphone 5, which is jailbreakable, but also has an encrypted bootloader. I don't see the advantage of staying with Android, apart from my Android Forums family. I'll my decision based upon where this goes. I'm eligible for a phone upgrade in about four months. Plenty of time to decide.

In the meantime, I pay Vzw so much money for my family plan... I'm not worried. They have literally bent over backwards to keep me, as I've threatened to leave several times. Money talks and I pay them a LOT.

I am enjoying my rooted GB so much, that I'm not going back. Period. However, when the OTA comes, I may unroot to accept it. Gingerblur has pleasantly surprised me and I'm very satisfied with it. It makes me miss sense ui less.

Good call, Steven! I, as well will revert to stock if there is an official release and accept that release. GB has proven to be reliable so far and I don't see an absolute need to root it if the base ROM is as solid as we have seen so far. (ok, I lied, I will still want root...)
As with Steven's comment, I believe that Big Red has taken plenty of money from me in the past and I never even come close to using the 1400 minutes I set my plan to so my other accounts don't have limits on data, etc.
I drop $3000.00 a year on my service, so I think I'm entitled to get the best possible service for the money. If Verizon is unwilling to provide me that service, I'm pretty sure ANY of the other carriers would be more than happy to "bend over backwards" to get my patronage.
To the Verizon corporate personnel:
A mass exodus from your company could be possible if you continue with your threats to your loyal customers. Shutting down service due to the use of technology which exists physically on your devices could mean breach of contract on YOUR part, essentially nullifying any claim to ETS you might try to collect. Think about it.

i dont know about you guys, but i pay extra money every month so that if my phone shits the bed i file a claim with asurion not verizon.
verizon can kiss my grits!!!

I dumped Asurion. They will never get another dime from me. When I came over from Eris to X, they offered me $132 trade-in for my like-new phone. After 5 months, repeated e-mails and phone calls, they never sent me anything. After that experience, I decided to buy an otterbox and take my chances on having to replace one out-of-pocket. I can't imagine having to deal with them for a warranty issue. Asurion are a bunch of rip-off artists.

I'm staying rom'd until the end. Worst case, if they decide to kick us off the network, I'll get a Nexus phone or maybe a BB with another carrier.. I bought my Droid X because it has the same capabilities as a full PC, if that's taken away then what's the point? iPhone is out of the question, unless they fix that horrible, horrible notification system, even still probably not.
