Root putting cynogenmod on my touch 4g

Hi..
what could be the advantages and disadvantages of having this open source in my touch 4g? like for example: could somebody hack my phone (see texts, listen to my calls, and everything), if I have this cyanogen thing? I have that doubt.

If I hadn't put Cyanogen on my MyTouch 4G, I would have returned my phone the day after I bought it. I hated the Sense UI, the uninstallable bloatware, the Genius button, the Swype keyboard, and pretty much everything that came in the version of Android with the phone.

Cyanogen's rom is excellent and beautiful. Read instructions carefully before rooting, but after you root you won't regret it.

Darkwarrior is correct, rooting can be fraught with headaches. Corrupted sd cards, bootloops, hanging X's. READ and backup all including sd card.

I have been rooted on an N1 for a year. Most people did the N1 root cause it gave features like FM Radio, 720p recording, and some extra tweeks. CM7 is now running GB 2.3.3 as well as MIUI-Dev.

That said, I don't see the need to root the MT4g. My son is using mine as I kept the N1. But, I like sense and have a Desire HD rom from MicroMod I use on occasion and love it.

I think batery life sucks on all the hi-res screens. Although, I run everything all the time. Wifi, BT, Max Screen Brightness.

My son really likes the MT4g and has no interest in rooting. But, spend a month reading the XDA forum threads in the Android Dev section. Cyanogen/Rodriguez/etc. It will give you a better feel for pros/cons.

Enjoy your MT4g

@aysiu,

Why would you buy a phone you hate--did you not research and test it in store several times?

the mytouch 4g is very good for a stock phone. The only reason i wanted to root was for the better battery life. Im using setcpu right now with stock 2.2.1 on it right now, and its cool. I have yet to flash anything, mainly because i havent had time. But i will test out a few roms and see. i mean there is always the galaxy s 4g with touch wiz.....

SetCpu/Overclocking and Full Image Backups are 2 good reasons. I guess with the MT4g and new dual-cores coming out, there is less reason to root.

I have times when I wondered why I did it and times I was happy. But, your first post stands--too many people have jumped in and got in a lot of trouble. Albeit, the MT4g seems easier to root then my N1 was with SDK/ADB and unlocking the bootloader. Took awhile to figure all that out on mine own.

I didn't think I'd hate it. I read hundreds of online reviews and played with it in the store twice before buying it. Unfortunately there were things that bothered me that didn't bother most reviewers. They're also not things I could get a good sense of after only a minute or two using a demo. Fortunately it's only the software and not the hardware I hate. Rooting fixed everything.

Wow!

I have an N1 I like, but prefer sense and you guys have sense and prefer CM roms.

I am looking to get the new dual cores coming out like the LG G2X. Maybe I should sell the N1 here when I am ready for the dual cores :)

ken,

It really depends on what you're looking for. The people that tend to like Sense tend like a more polished interface. HTC Sense is a very slick "cover" of Android. That "cover" comes with its drawbacks though. There are apps you can't uninstall (thereby taking up CPU and storage resources).

The people that tend to prefer CM tend to like more control over their phone and what runs on it. If you get rid of Sense though be prepared to lose some of those widgets/applications that you enjoy.

The good news is that if you install CM7 and don't like it, you should easily be able to go the backup that you made (if you make one--YOU SHOULD!!!!) and it will be like you never left.

Good luck!

Brad,

I have been flashing roms for a year now and do have bu's of sense/desire, CM/Nightlies, and MIUI roms. Do like the sense smoothnees though. Will probably get the G2x. It will be rooted and running CM roms quickly. N1 development is slowing.

You can uninstall, if rooted, pretty much whatever you want with Titanium Backup and/or Fastboot.

I wouldn't be buying any TMobile phones right now that won't work on AT&T's 4g network. The G2x will. I got my MT4g free in February, so I guess I can swallow the fact it may be obsolete in a year. But, by then new bigger, faster phones anyway. The N1 was great when it came out, but is not best out there anymore.

But, anyway, on topic, rooting is great as long as you go in to it prepared.
