Ready to upgrade from Hero

Hi, I`m ready to upgarde from my Hero.

I liked the phone, apart from the 2.1 delay that did my head in. . and since the minor update last month i`ve had al sorts of Bugs and hanging problems.

So what phone do you suggest. I`m on Orange now and I normally go for the best new curent phone.

Thanks

Been looking at the Incredible S, which seems like the best choice for me at the moment (a bit smaller than the desire HD and the upcoming dual core sensation). But: locked down bootloader. Apparently nobody has even managed to root it yet. So: no thanks. Same will apply to the sensation, from what i hear. This, from the company with a reputation for being helpful to modders. No more, it seems.

HTC, wtf are you playing at?

Also really liking the look of the sony ericsson experia arc. Beautiful looking piece of kit, amazing camera and screen, ships with 2.3, and apparently S-E have said they will unlock the bootloader for anyone that asks (proof that S-E is indeed a very separate company from sony). Apparently the battery life is pants but i'm almost willing to forgive it that if it looks that good.

Howeeeeeevvvvveeeeeer: internal storage: 320MB. uh? Uh? UH?!?!? Thats not much more than my hero. The original desire had 512MB and people complain about that not being enough - the latest generation of phones all seem to be 1GB+. It's a bit short on RAM too, 512MB vs the 768MB-1Gig on the rest of the latest top end phones. Basically, this supposedly top end cutting edge phone is not future proof in any way.

Its almost as if somebody passed a law that says every new android phone has to have at least one stupid feature. :(

Edit: it seems it's actually 512MB internal ROM, the 320MB is the expected amount available after the OS install. Even so... meh

Yeah, I'm definitely not buying a phone until I know it's fully rootable. That's the only thing that keeps a phone interesting for 18/24 months.

At least we have apps2sd+ to rely on if the internal memory is low. It's a better compromise than having a locked bootloader.

finally my 2 year (forever) contract is coming to an end!

Dilemma - do i play safe and get HTC desire S or take a gamble with SE experia arc???

fantastic looking phone, only concern is internal storage, as mentioned by previous post.
If can save apps onto SD card though is it still a problem?

The way i see it, it's not a problem now, but it could well start to be a year down the line.

When all the other top end android phones are being released with 1-1.5GB of internal storage (and a few with 8, 16, even 32GB), and 1GB of RAM, app developers are going to start make use of this capacity (else why is it there? Presumably HTC & samsung havent just put it there for a laugh). How long before a phone with only a fraction of that capacity starts to creak? When i first got my hero there wasnt anything it wouldnt run, but now it's becoming a real problem.

Interestingly the japanese version appears to ship with 1GB internal storage, i dont quite know what to make of that. If that version was available in the UK for a (reasonable) premium i'd buy that version in a heartbeat. Having said all that the RAM might be just as much of an issue in the long term, and that's harder to fix, affects battery life etc.

My orange contract is up soon as well. I'm torn between going pay as you go for a while to save money, i've only just flashed gingerbread on my hero so its like a new phone to me anyway (for a while) or upgrading. I've just gone to log on to my orange account and they are getting the Motorola Atrix - good specs but froyo. I haven't had any experience with Motorola.

My contract is already up but I'm waiting for the Moto Atrix to be released on Orange. I like HTC and Sense but the 4.3 format is too big for me and the desire s has very disappointing specs. The Hero was a ground-breaking phone when I got it and I'm looking for a similar jump. A lot of the Atrix issues in the US seem to be more to do with AT&T and won't be an issue here. It's a very high specced phone whatever your view of the docks.

I spent a lot of time looking at all the dual cores etc coming out but in the end got the Nexus S as I decided that my time with the Hero showed me that software is more of a priority than hardware. I have no regrets at all as the phone is as fast as Android can handle and I feel comforted that I will always be first to get any updates. Also it is dead easy to hack.

I'm still a few months off upgrading but have been starting to think about phones - mainly because I really like the tracker ball on the Hero and I've not seen any new phones that use one!

A couple of HTC's had optical tracker balls about a year ago (original Incredible and Nexus 1) but those were scroll only and you couldn't use it as a button. Now, as far as I can see, no-one makes any phones with a similar tracker ball.

Does anyone know of a phone with a Hero-esque tracker ball?

The optical pad on the Desire Z works exactly the same way as the Hero's trackball i.e. push-to-select.

p.s. I've seen the upgrade I want - the newly-announced HTC Sensation! Fingers crossed that Orange will be picking this one up....

Just been reading about that.. seems powerful but there was a mention that the power might run the HTC battery dry in a flash.. unless HTC have found a good battery..

Well that was said about the Z too and it's actually pretty frugal thanks to the increased efficiency of the CPU. Of more concern is HTC continuing with the same bootloader security seen in the S-series. :(
