To all those who moved on to the Desire HD.

I didnt upgrade to the desire HD, I still have the desire so take this as you will.

The HD is not much better and is still quite old. Its a bigger screen (same res so not as good quality) battery life has been reported by some to be better and worse.

I'd say no. Its not worth it. Save the cash and stay with the desire for another year and get something really special

BIG FAT +1, I'm on a 2 year contract which ends may next year, nothing out that's tempting me enough to buy outright, the desire is holding its own very well among the new phones out, apart from the internal memory (I'm getting tired of whining about that tbh) there's nothing it can't do really, very happy to hold onto it for another year.

threaten to leave and they will give u a sensation or incredible s and drop it to abt 20 quid a month.

that would work with 3 anyway. depends who you are with.

absolutely top advice ... don't waste time trying to negotiate a deal
Don't accept first, second or even third offer....

terminate your contract in writing and wait for the call from "retention"

Has worked every year with Voda for the last 5 years

Always got the phone I wanted ... and never paid anything for it not even P&P

Ah yes I upgraded to the hd, which is why I'm here wasting my time with you little people :$

I'd at try to negotiate a lower rolling contract instead of a further commitment, at least til the summer when iPhone wars begin. Although maybe not to the low 15 quid. When you finally upgrade your phone the network will review your payments from the last few months. They're unlikely to offer you a great deal when they see you've been a cheapskate.

That can work but it could also backfire if they call your bluff. They can happily discard you as a blagger if you mention a high end handset. Vodafone's target these days is to attain new customers onto dirty 24 month contracts. O2 are much better at retaining.

I'm half way through my 24 month contract with Carphone Warehouse (unbranded Desire with AMOLED screen) and this is my first contract phone so I was wondering what happens on the lead up to the 24th month. Will I be offered a new phone and/or reduced monthly charge? Do they ask for the old phone back?

My main issue with the Desire is the internal memory. Better HD video would be good. The still picture quality was OK until I saw what a Nokia N8 could do! Multi-touch rotate would also be handy. I guess my next phone will have near field Near Field Communication too. Otherwise, I'm very content with my Desire.

You can write to them and ask to cancel your contract or phone to request an upgrade in the 23rd month (I think)
You might even be able to switch tariffs.

If you look at your account on line it will tell you when you are eligible for an upgrade.

If you do nothing you will just continue with the same contract/tariff (and Phone)

The MAY call you and offer you something......... eventually.

And no they wont ask for the phone back , even if you cancel.

Hmmm, the HD doesnt have a fantastic screen and the battery is worse than your desire.

I would get a dual core, depends how much you want to spend over what time, want a 12 month contract?

I would have to disagree with this. The screen on the HD is much better than the original desire, and the battery on my HD blows my desire away.

That being said, OP, I would still recommend waiting. My HD isn't all that different from my desire. The things that are better on HD: The screen, the battery life, the call quality (HUGE improvement), its a bit snappier.

Thats about it. Hope that helps :)

Which are you disagreeing with lol?

I didnt compare the screen to the original desire.. It does have a bad screen when compared to the latest phones. E.G. compared to the Optimus 2X it is dire.

It does have a worse battery life than the original....

DHD definitely has worse battery life than Desire. All things equal, just look at the battery capacity and screen size - DHD has to provide more energy on larger screen (4.3" vs 3.7") with a lower capacity battery (1230mAh vs 1400mAh).

The screen quality difference and pixelation is still visible to naked eye. DHD is on a disadvantage because of low PPI: 217 vs 252 on Desire. This is just one parameter, not taking into account other factors in display technology.
