Accessories Bluetooth headsets?

Hi all,

Just picked up my Nexus S yesterday and man am I in LOVE! Left behind an iphone 3G with AT&T.

Question is: Has anyone had any good or bad experience with bluetooth headsets on this phone? Any brands or models you have tried and used successfully?

Any thoughts or comments on this would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

DH

Anybody out there?

I work in very noisy environments so I'm always using BT headsets with excellent noise-cancelling. I currently am using the Plantronics Voyager Pro+, and a Jawbone 2 for my backup. I love the Plantronics Voyager Pro+ so much, that I own three of them. The other two are for my work phone (a primary and a backup for when the battery dies). I plan on trying the new Jawbone Era pretty soon to see how comfortable the fit is and how loud the incoming volume is.

Thanks for your helpful comments. I've been seriously considering the "Pro +". it looks like a great functional bluetooth headset. Reviews have been superlative also. I currently have a plantronics Discovery 640 that I've had for about 5 years. It still works okay, but I'm looking for something more current with better technology.

Thanks again for your reply to my question and for firming up my decision to go with the "Pro +".

Sincerely,

Dave H

You're welcome Dave! Before I purchased the Pro+, I was going through BT headsets every couple of weeks to find the perfect one for my work/personal life. I'm definitely satisfied with the Pro+, but the only thing I wish could be improved is the size of the headset. I sometimes wear the headset for 6 hours straight and the weight/size of this headset can get annoying. If you're interested, I'll report back on what I think of the Jawbone Era. Hopefully it's worth the price tag.

toydawg,

Yeah, let me know what you think of the "ERA". I don't think the large form factor of the "Pro +" will be an issue for me as I'm only a casual user. I don't need for work. Most of my extended phone conversations are made at home to family in Florida, and regular customer service calls. I don't like having to hold a cell phone up to my face for more than a few minutes at a time, so I use a headset. It also frees up my hands to do other things, especially if I'm on hold with on a customer service call, i.e. credit card company, phone company, insurance co., etc. I will occasionally use in the car if I know that someone will be trying to reach me while I'll be driving, but those are rare occasions. I don't think I'd ever have it on my ear more than an hour at a time with my phone usage habits. Because of that, I think the Pro + would be ideal.

Thanks for your helpful information, and yes, I would be interested in your opinion of the "ERA".

Also, does the "PRO +" integrate well with your "NEXUS S" ?

Let me know.

Thanks,

Dave H

The Pro+ integrated very well with my NS. I have it connected to both my work phone and NS. The only feature I use on the headset is the voice commands/voice search function which is just a long hold on the primary button.

I also had a chance to use the Jawbone Era for a week now and after a lot of playing around with the fit and different size earpieces that come with the headset, I've finally found a good fit. Here's my quick review.

The features are definitely advanced compared to many BT headsets available today, but is also limited since the product is so new. The Era has a micro USB slot for charging and syncing/updating on your PC or MAC. To fully utilize the features of the Era you must sign up with an account on their website to be able to update the firmware of your headset as well as install "apps" to it to customize it. It seems that they have apps you could install on an iPhone, but none available for Android yet. The "apps" or features you could choose for your headset are choices for different types of voices you would hear when an imcoming call is received. The stock settings always read the full phone number, but there's an option to make a custom phonebook on the Jawbone website to have the voice speak the name of whoever you enter in this option.

I'm pretty satisfied with the sound quality and the feedback I've received from my colleagues on how I sound speaking in a noisy environment was positive. The Era uses an auto volume adjustment depending on how noisy of an environment you're in. There is an option to either make the primary button on the headset to enable/disable noise suppression or to manually adjust the volume.

Another good feature is that it is A2DP compatible, so I have it paired with my iPod touch 4G, along with my NS and HTC Ozone (work phone). It's not stereo sound of course, but music is decent with the larger and better speaker they started using in the Era compared to all of their past headsets. If you use this feature, you have to make sure to pair the A2DP device first, then the remaining phones afterwards.

Overall, I feel that it is an expensive headset that is not for everyone, but with the ability of updating it constantly with new upcoming features is new, exciting, and fun. I'm planning on keeping it to see what else Aliph will offer on the Era.

In the near future, I plan on borrowing my friend's convertible to test how it sounds incoming and outgoing.

Thanks "toydawg" for the detailed review! Sounds like an interesting high tech headset.

My question to you, having experience with both the "Era" and the "Pro+", which would you recommend to someone like myself, who will be a light user, and mostly at home in my own bedroom (calls to family in Florida).

Thanks again!

Dave H

Sorry for the late response. I would recommend the Pro+. You can find them for a great price, great call quality (from both user and other party), and comfortable.

In the past few weeks, I've noticed that I still prefer to use my Pro+ over the Era. It's just more comfortable to wear in my opinion. I'm still keeping the Era to see which new features they plan to add to it.

Thanks "toydawg",

On your earlier recommendation, I went ahead and got the pro+, and so far I love it!

I learned five years ago when I first started to experiment with BT headsets, that its how well the headset works with the phone. Before I found my Plantronics 640, I tried out three or four other major brand headsets, but they didn't work well with my samsung N900. Way too much static with most of them, and some didn't want to pair up easily. The 640 was by far the best with that phone.

The reason I posted my question in this forum was because I wanted to hear back from someone who had tried the pro+ with the Nexus S specifically. You're feedback was invaluable, as you were using it with the same phone I would be using it with!

I liked the look and design of the original pro model. It looked like the perfect headset for the kind of calling I normally do (mostly at home). So I didn't mind that it's form factor was a little on the large side. Style was not my objective. I was looking for pure functionality. This unit just looked right. When the "+" model came out, I was ready to upgrade, but needed some reassurance that it would integrate well with the Nexus s.

Thanks again for your valuable feedback on this headset. It has saved me from having to do a lot of experimenting.

Best,

Dave H
