Roaming on AT&T 3G?

So, since this has T-Mobile and AT&T 3G bands, as a T-Mobile subscriber when I'm roaming on AT&T's network in a place that AT&T has 3G will I be able to use it? Up at school in Michigan (Ferris State University), T-Mobile has no service but ATT does so I'm on Edge when I'm roaming up there wondering with the bands if this will change! Thanks to anyone who responds!

It's sim locked to Tmo when you buy it subsidized. Off contract price and they give you the unlock for the phone right away. Subsidized and you have to wait a little while. Tmo has no signal on the 850/1900 bands, so it would be of no use to you while you are a tmo subscriber. Only use for the 850/1900 3g bands is if you get it off contract and unlock it and use it as an ATT phone, or if the merger goes through, or out of country.

I believe the FCC over a random poster who has "a guy" who somehow got a G2X before it is available in stores (tomorrow) and did "something" to it to unlock it. It is probably an international 2x which he improperly rooted/flashed with a non functional rom.

Read all the links in that thread. Tmobile's own website lists it as quad band UMTS, hence all the confusion.

I did read- it still comes down to a guy who had his phone unlocked outside of his presence and there is no indication whether he bought it full price, was in good standing with Tmo, or whatever. The Tmo representative said the phone was compatible, but that Tmo reserves the right to not activate certain features, hence the sim unlock for those not in good standing, or those who buy it on contract before at least 40 days.

How does one go about getting the unlock code? It surely can't be as easy as asking the store rep when you purchase it, right?

You have to purchase it off contract, or wait 40 days or so on contract and in good standing. By law they have to give you it. ATT makes you wait until the end of your contract for their unlock codes. You can also buy them online.

Just because it is sim unlocked doesnt necessarily mean that the 3g is enabled- the Atrix is still crippled because of ATT. Tmo may have a software update waiting on contract with LG to prevent people from doing what some people are trying- import a potentially cheaper phone from America until after a set amount of time for LG to roll out the O2x in those markets.

But do you just buy it outright, and then ask the store rep for the code?

I'm on the EMP plan and I paid for my Moto Defy outright in November...went home and called T-Mo's customer service line, and they provided the code right away. Unfortunately, the code (8-10 digits or so) did not work, and the case was escalated to engineering. I received an email with the code (12-15 digits or so) a few hours later, and I'm able to use the Defy on AT&T with 3G support.

I am actually that 'random guy'. Bought from my source in the states for $650. He usually has access to phones early by a couple of days. You mentioned you read the thread but I believe you may have missed the detail in the OP that it is branded T-Mobile on the front of the device itself. I have the full retail box and kit.

I am not bothering with rooting if I can't even get the phone to recognize my network.

OK, I will believe that you can have the Tmo phone unlocked in your hands a few days early. I didnt think it was clear whether you had gotten it for non contract pricing (which would mean you can get the sim unlock lifted). But Tmo and LG still may not want customers outside of the states to have access to the phone if LG has its own rollout plans for the O2x in Canada, cause that takes away from Rogers/Bell profits. The bands may not be enabled by default because of these agreements, and you may need rooting and a custom radio baseband with a rooted phone for the G2x vs the O2x to enable all the radios. Someone on that original thread also mentioned that Rogers and Bell do not have roaming agreements, which is why you see nothing- no 2g, nothing. Same as the rooted Atrix with proper radios having 3+g upload speeds vs. stock ATT Atrix still not enabling the 3g upload.

I had the at&t attic it works fine on bell and rogers. The problem is that only ROGERS have a 2g network in Canada. Everybody else has 3g/hspa only (whether it be on aws or other bands). I mentioned in the thread (yeah, I'm aware of the long thread) that I actually borrowed a rogers sim and 2g works fine. Also I tried a sim from an aws carrier and it's good. Just a fyi. I do hope that the phone actually has those bands and just needs activation via a Tom.

I hope it has the bands too- the only reason Im willing to plunk down $500 in a few weeks time is because of the possible merger with ATT. I won't get a full price phone that will be crippled in a years' time.

I called for the unlock code today, as I have both att and tmo. The rep was surprised thathe IMEI # didn't start w/normal tmo "35xxx". He said that the phone was "probably too new" and escalated the ticket for the code". Hopefully I'll get an email soon like I did with my Defy, which also had to "go to engineering".
