Download: import MyPhoneExplorer SMS to Android

Hello,

I hope this is the correct forum...
as text messages are very important to me I searched for a solution to import my text messages from my Sony Ericsson to my Android phone. Few days ago SMS Backup & Restore was published for Android phones making a XML file import possible. As the XML format differed from the one you can export from MPE I created a simple (and crude) tool to convert the XML.

If you want you can only import sent or received messages. If you have an archive files containing both sent and received messages my program supports it, too. Name it "mpe_sms.xml" in this case.

Usage:

1. Export your Inbox messages in MPE as XML (Select all, right click, Export, as XML). The file must be called "mpe_sms.xml" and must be placed in the directory of the converter.
2. Export your Sent messages as XML. It must be called "mpe_sms_sent.xml".
3. Start the converter, click on the first button, then on the next button. It will create a file called "sms.xml".
4. Place this file to your Android SD card in "SMSBackupRestore"-Folder.
5. Open SMS Backup & Restore, click Restore.

It runs fine but it crashes when I click load and convert. If it click export to sms.xml it still works fine but the file produced has nothing in it.

Hey,
this is probably because my program currently only supports Timestamps like
dd.MM.yyyy HH:mm:ss
dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss

Could you please provide me with the error message and one sample timestamp? Open up mpe_sms.xml and send me one line containing "<timestamp>".

The error message is "WpfApplication1 has stopped working" Windows can check online for a solution to the problem". I think it crashes, does it come up with a browse window when you click "Load and convert mpe_sms.xml and mpesms_sent.xml" ? Because everytime I click it, the program just stops responding and instantly shows that message.

Yes, the problem lied in the timestamp.
I uploaded a newer version to fit all existing timestamp format (hopefully). Error should be gone now. Please check afterwards, if the time is correct in the SMS application of your Nexus One.

The converter still crashes once I click "load and convert".

I am still unable to convert it. Is there any compatibility issues? It just crashes once I click the "load and convert" button. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? I put the exe in the same folder as my "mpe_sms.xml" and "mpe_sms_sent.xml".

Is the load button supposed to come up with a browsing window to select the files? Because mine does not. It just crashes as soon as I click that button.

I'm sure the problem can still be found in my parsing procedure. If you could send me your XML files (jonas dot bark at gmx dot de) then I could fully fix it.
If you have concernes about your privacy you can also try to send me an excert (of both XML files if possible) which should look like this:

hello Jonas,
i have exactly the same problem as pastel, and i'm veeery interested in gettign my msgs imported to my android, so i was wondering if you still work on this?

i also keep the .exe and the two xml files in same folder (my desktop) - my timestamp looks like the one you initially said it supported, and i'm on winxp sp3 (in case that changes anything) -

if you make this work you'll be my (second) hero

Yes, I am still willing to support this application. I can totally understand the need of importing SMS. Someone also sent me a beer at paypal, that had my motivation improved as well

It's strange that this error still pops up. I thought I adressed these errors. Maybe I forgot something somewhere else. Please provide me with the informations mentioned in my last post. You can also send me the file and I'll make it work for you. My mail adress is written in the application.

hey jonas!

when i was preparing excerpts for you i decided to try and run the excerpts through your programme - to make sure they didnt work - but then they worked!!
After quite many tests i realized that it must be because i have some sent-messages in the inbox-file and vice-versa - so both files had a mix.

They were there because my archive on myponeexplorer is huge (10.000+) and contains both sent and received messages. It was a hassle to divide them in the two files and apparently I didnt do it properly, cause my divided files arent working -

if anybody has an idea how i can easily select only sent and only received messages before making the xml backup-files i'd be happy to hear.
It already took me quite a while to do it with the two first files, and I must have missed some...

Another small problem i have is: i successfully imported 2 files to my phone now (the tested excerpts) and they do show up in my sms inbox, but they dont seem to sync to gmail with the smsbackup app - also on of them (the recieved one) has a small "SD-card" logo next to it in my phones sms-inbox.
Might that be why it doesnt sync? And how can i move it form the SD-card to the phone memory?

Hello,
great that it worked! I guess my part is done. What I could do is implementing a method to divide the entries between sent and inbox messages. I think this can be done. Do you want that?
I think automatic seperation in MyPhoneExplorer is not possible. If your sent messages don't have a timestamp you could sort it by Timestamp.

I have no idea about the gmail sync, sorry.

if you can make it sort em out from just one file then that would be super!
I cant sort them so well by timestamp as some of them have no time stamp - others are a big chunk with same timestamd and others have the time stamp of the time i received them (when phone was online at the time of reception). And it seems just a single sms in wrong file will make it crash as pastel described it.

I'll look into the matter of moving them from sd to phone memory and if i find a fix i'll post it here (as i think many ppl use the sms backup to gmail app).

Then I'll have a try soon.
Pastels problems wasn't a single line. He did not have a mpe_sms_sent.xml as he didn't want to import sent sms. I had no method included to support this case.

Root is not needed. SMS Backup & Restore uses your SD card to open the xml files.
