Meh, it shouldn't need a new SIM given that a few of my other phones work well on AT&T. My co-worker and myself are using a 3+ year old SIMs in our Inspires, and still connecting on "H+". Going into the test G2x's menu, I only see options for GSM and WCDMA, no UMTS.
Looking at the box, I can see how people may think that it has HSPA/UMTS on the 850/1900 bands...but on closer inspection, it reads
Frequency: GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 / UMTS/HSPA+: AWS Band IV/2100
Rated for hearing aids: M3
I think that its the "/" in-between the 1900, and UMTS, that makes it seem inclusive, but I think its more of a separator, given spaces, before and after the /.
Oh well. Given that I just bought the T-Mo mifi, I was hoping to have a phone for use on AT&T, which also had "hotspot" capability, when in poor T-Mo signal areas...esp. on the $10/mo. MediaNet plan.
I'm more disappointed about the G2x's reception. Its really weird how it reports signal, and its performance. It will show "2 out of 4 bars", when the signal is at -105dBm. It will still make a call right away, where my other phones may struggle, or experience delay in connecting, at that dBm level. Either way, holding the phone anywhere near the bottom half of the phone significantly drops signal, and it is consistently 10-15dBm lower than my T-Mo Defy, even when lying idle on the desk.
I can live without the notification LED (that community developed beta that's out works for everything save POP3 mail via stock email/K-9 client), and maybe even a basic messaging widget (didn't think I'd miss the Motoblur widget this much), but the reception issue is a deal breaker for me. Especially given how much faster the battery is draining at the -100dBm+ signal levels. FWIW, when I had good signal (-68dBm), I was able to manage 7.3Mbs at my house w/the G2x, where the Defy never broke 5.4Mbs.
