Right, so, I think I need a bit of convincing.

Hola, mis amigos!

Hello, my friends (although I'm not sure I could call us friends at this point), I need a little bit of help. I've had an iPhone 3G for around a year now, and I'm eligible for an upgrade. After going though the AT&T page full of smartphones, I decided that I would break out of the iCage and switch to Android. Of course, the phone that caught my eye was the the Xperia X10. The device itself looks stunning, and I'm completely ready to buy it. However, I think I might need some convincing. From what I've seen and read, it is a gorgeous phone, and one of the fastest, cheapest ones out there. This by itself would be enough for me to order it right away, but after reading some more, I think I have a few questions:

  • What is rooting? What does it do? Will it remove things like Timescape and Mediascape?
  • Is the limit of 65K colors really affecting the phone? Is there anything noticable about it?
  • My back-up phone was the HTC Aria. How do you think these two compare?
  • Would you yourself reccomend this phone to anyone else?
  • Please give a rating, considering all the factors of the phone, between 0 and 10.

Also: Anything I need to know before I order? Any secret tricks, or crippling glitches? Thanks!

rooting is basically gaining superuser access, kinda like jailbreaking ur iphone.... u can also download root apps such as titanium backup, etc... by rooting, u can also install custom roms and themes.. and yes, you can remove timescape and mediascape if u dont use them
65k colours, no biggie... honestly i dont care n its still a sharp phone in terms of colour n contrast
i would definitely recommend this phone, cuz it was my first android phone too.. i was a bit confused at first, but love it now... VERY customisable and with a new software update (2.3) coming in june/july... i think its a wise choice

X10 is a great phone but its over a year old now and SE have released better phones such as the Arc so i'm not sure i would be considering an X10 at this stage,
phone is great only after you root and go custom rom, SE releasing 2.3 could be a huge improvement on whats out there even now as everything will work.

one downside to the phone that nothing will fix is incall volume, its really poor and you can struggle to hear anyone unless in a quiet environment.
other than that i love my X10 :D

Now, you see, I really struggle with this. I keep hearing people complaining how poor the incall volume is, but I've never had a problem with this. In fact, when one of my friends phones me, I have to make sure I turn the volume down or else they're too loud!

I just wonder if the people who have this problem are the same people who listen to loud music all day long with headphones in and so have damaged their hearing without realising it - just a thought.

only bad point with yours (AT&T)
is they aren't up to date yet
still stuck on 1.6 (if you wanna stay 100% legit with them)
but what i would do is travel up north and get one from Rogers... lol
and don't mind my sig lol
i'm on my 3rd x10a, but no major problem found in the 2 before
found it it was a router issue on the 3rd
-------------
good points of this phone
a part from design...
powerfull
big screen
quality parts
anything else not already mentionned in previous posts?
---------------
as for rating... as owning an older SE phone (k790a) as backup over an iphone 3g
knowing the company like i know it, with the lack of support from SE/AT&T/Rogers etc...
an easy 8.5/10

The X10 is a very good phone I think. The in-call volume does not bother me and I wouldn't recommend it if you couldn't put custom ROMs on it as the stock ROM is slow sometimes and not very smooth sometimes. I started using MIUI ROM 2 days ago and I really like it, it is a lot better and smoother with no lags.

I would suggest waiting for the Arc, too. I love my X10, but the X10 from AT&T is stuck on Android 1.6 and my guess is that AT&T are going to be in no hurry to update the phone. The X10 from Rogers in Canada is on Android 2.1 and there is a chance that it will be upgraded to 2.3. But the Arc is a newer phone with a newer processor, a camera flash (rather than the X10's photo light which isn't awfully useful).

I agree ("often laggish"), I'm not sure I am even "qualified" to own this phone as its supposed to be a "smart phone" and regularly makes me look stupid!
- slow operating very often
- calls cut off or go muted, because i accidentally bump the 'end call' or 'mute' button on my ear!!
- no ability in the default text system to add multiple recipients for a text without 3 steps for every name (have now downloaded ChompSMS and experienced four hour dealy in sending a picture message... which is worse?!)
- that's just off the top of my head....

any tips to educate me most welcome!
