Nexus Moves 20,000 Units in Its First Week

T-Mobile employees arent even trained in the N1...heck the visits I have made to the store 2 didnt even know what it was. I am not suprised the number is so low. Google isnt throwing out this huge marketing plan like Verizon. AND I think that is a good thing. When the iPhone came out it was SUPER expensive and nobody had one because of how spendy. I was proud to carry around a unique and top of the line phone. Then they changed things up with the 3G and 3GS and now EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHERS have one.

Now with an N1, I like that I am a rare bunch that carries one. I practically had to pry it from the T-Mobile rep that essentially begged me to play with it...And for what its worth I scored her phone number too...AWWWW YEA.

whatever the sales numbers... the BOTTOM line for ME... is that I really like my Nexus One... it's an awesome device and breath of fresh air after 2.5 yrs with an iPhone (2G then 3GS)... I like that fact that i'm one of few to have one at this point in time... at least unique for a few weeks ;) lol

Buying the thing as an existing T-Mobile customer was a pain, and most people who were interested in Android most likely bought a Droid. Not surprised at all.

I was an existing T-Mobile customer and actually it was the easiest thing in the world...

Buy Nexus One
Receive Nexus One
Insert T-Mobile SIM
Use phone


I was on a EM Plus plan, and this was the most seemless, handset buying experience I've ever done. Period.

Except dont they need to move alot to convince the phone makers its truly a viable way to sell their phones?

I don't think they are looking to convince them of that...this is simply another avenue of sales, they see an untapped market in the US of people who want to buy phones independent of carriers, but probably realize it is a long way off before it becomes mainstream.

If google wanted to do the "Home shopping network" approach to selling this phone then they should have just sold it on that network. I mean your asking people to buy a supposedly top of the line device but.....you cant physically touch it till after you buy it. Not having a option to view the phone in person obviously is having a huge impact on sales. Maybe the marketing changes as they get closer to releasing on verizon. Maybe its just people in general waiting for the phone to become available on verizon. I am. Still i thought the numbers would be higher.

Selling unlocked phones is not novel. In fact, Amazon has been doing it for a long time with a heck of a lot better reputation for doing it. Shoot, even e-bay is doing a better job of selling unlocked phones. Back to Amazon, better return policies, customer service and reputation for online sales. Honestly, unlocked sales of phones won't be an attractive option until unlocked prices for devices like phones drops significantly (perhaps, around $300).

well I live outside the US and managed to get a hold of N1 , I just got it today and it is very nice indeed , now I'm not the only one outside the US who is getting theirs . If you check eBay you see may sellers offering worldwide shipping .

I like the idea of the getting an unlocked phone direct . I didn't like Apple way and never bothered with the IPhone , even though it can be had officially unlocked .

also remember the first iPhone where selling well mostly to be sold via eBay . I recall reading about people using throw away account just to buy very over priced iPhone . And people started returning phones .

So numbers don't mean much .

The deal breaker for me was the lousy calling plan. I was all set to switch until Tmo refused to budge on 500 mins for $80! No way would I ditch an unlimited plan for which I pay LESS, just to get the Nexus! So, they can box up all those unsold N1's and make coasters for all I care. Perhaps they can give them out as party favors when the Bravo drops in April.

Tmo is an offshoot of DTK (Deutsche TeleKom) Which is the one of the largest carriers in Europe. So, while it is 4th in USA...it is backed by big guns. Truth be told, I sometimes think that maybe Tmo is a DTK experiment...

Again, that's the point Google is trying to make: More people will hear about the Nexus with the web compared to the traditional "brick and mortar" stores because everyone searches the web everyday. Hence, no demo devices at T-Mo stores. On top of that, it's not even recognized as a T-Mo phone, which is another reason it's not at stores. T-Mo is just providing service.

... and google searches of "nexus one" or "google phone" produce *overwhelmingly* negative search results.

"complaints mounting"
"could google be sued over n1?"
"just another andriod phone"
etc.

Not to diminish the importance of the 3g/edge reception issues, it almost seems as if forces are conspiring to squelch google's chances of success with their new "buck the system" approach.

But the phone makers can do that now through amazon or other internet retailers. Hell thats probably a better customer experience then the 3 headed dog Google has set up. God I hope Verizon gets another phone soon.

If VZW ends up not offering a discount for the N1 when it gets announced, I believe this will open the door for an HTC version of the N1, especially if HTC can get 2.1 and Sense to play nice. I don't think VZW is keen on supporting Google's experiment which obviously threatens their business model. I wouldn't expect friendly options on the Google phone website from VZW. Just a guess :)

Bro - you COULD have chosen to buy the Nexus One for $530 - completely contract free - and KEPT your unlimited plan.... But YOU chose not to... Don't try and blame T-Mo, for YOUR unwillingness to pay 530 for a handset, that WOULD have paid for itself in the long run since you would have kept your grand-fathered unlimited plan....

WHY people fail to see the long term savings of buying a slightly more expensive but CONTRACT-FREE device is beyond me.... Europeans understand this... Why can't Americans (North-Americans, Canadians included)!!??? Always so short-sighted rather than looking at the bigger longer term picture... :rolleyes:

I don't think it has anything to do with advertising etc... There was a TON of press dedicated to this phone being the iphone killer. Fox, Cnn etc... all had articles/news on the launch date - not to mention all the annoying adverts in web pages. Its not about exposure. Its about the software/experience.

Most reviews I've read bear this out ( justifiable imho ). You can sum every review up like so :

nice screen
fast processor

Cons
unpolished
laggy experience
shitty 3g connection
Shitty storage space for 3rd party apps ( ie only 190mb for apps )
weak app store
no multitouch
etc...

The nexus is a dud and its googles fault. Why they would trot out a phone that can't meet the iphone feature for feature - is beyond me.
When faced with that pro/con list, most people will just get an iPhone for $99...

I would put "nice screen" in the cons. A review that is obviously not by an iPhone fan-boy and seems rather objective:

N1 screen gets trumped in color accuracy (which I knew would be the case since reviewers were already using adjectives like "punchy" and "over-saturated") and brightness. Actually, the Motorola DROID was chosen as the best of the lot for near perfect color accuracy and being second brightest, while having decent black reproduction.

I also just found out that the N1 screen is 16-bit (i.e. 65,000 scales) whereas the iPhone and DROID are both 24-bit (i.e. 1,67M scales). With an AMOLED screen that gets washed out in sunlight, it's really only impressive indoors and yet still falls short to better executed LCDs. But I guess it does save on power consumption.

Save the American comment please, I think we understand it just fine. Even being grandfather into a contract at 20 less a month only represents a saving of 480 over a two year period vs. an initial saving of 350. We are talking about 130 bucks over two years, it not as though its a huge savings considering inflation over the two year period or using the 350 towards another investment/debt.

First of all, I'm NOT a bro, sister! But I understand that you have several disabilities...math not the least of them. I will NEVER...repeat NEVER pay full price for anything in this world. Not now, not ever. Those of you who paid that $530 will now have to deal with the inevitable news of the price drop that was reported yesterday.

Short-sightedness is about not seeing the big picture. The big picture is that companies look for "Einsteins" who "want to be first on their block" to have a thing so that they can bleed them. It happened with the iPhone and then a major price drop and now the N1. I did not purchase a ticket on the ship of fools.

One thing about us Americans is that we know how to bargain and negotiate. If the deal isn't suitable, we walk. And I will have an N1 on MY terms or not at all. I'm cool with that.

I have an Android phone AND an unlimited plan for less than what Tmo is offering for the N1. Besides, according to reports, the N1 has issues. Google Faces Deluge of Nexus One Complaints - PC World

But by all means, you continue to pay up the wazoo for a phone. You're smart. :rolleyes:

It's pointless to argue with someone who loves their device. It's the fan-boy-ism. The same guy tried to argue with me about the objectivity of empirical evidence/data. It's like lifting up a dumbbell that says and weighs 30 lbs and saying, "No, no... this is definitely 15 lbs because it feels much lighter to me."

I simply argued my subjective observation did not jive your so-called objective data... you comment that perhaps it's to do with contrast, not brightness... could possibly explain it... i'm just commenting on what i myself see...

NowVoyager is just upset because the Nexus didn't come in at a price he was expecting and/or willing to pay in combination with keeping his grand-fathered plan... his perogative... which is cool... although he made it sound like there was NO other option for him... there was... he just wasn't willing to pay for it... And yet he feels the need to slam folks that spent full price for the no-contract approach... hey, free message board, free speech, he can say what he wants... it's all good

I like my phone, true. But I wouldn't call myself a proponent of DROID. My friend asked me the other day and I said, "No, I can't recommend the DROID." Then he asked about the N1, and I said, "No, I can't recommend the N1 either." In fact, I told him, "If you can wait, I would wait. There are better phones coming out in the next 6-12 months."

If my buddy asked me back in November, "Should I get a DROID?" I would have said, "Yes, absolutely," because he would have a solid year before the next generation processors get deployed into phones. The current OMAP3 and Snap are of relatively the same generation in the sense that they are single core. But now that we're into the new year, it's not worth it. It's now a waiting game to see if both phones drop in price, which with recent release, the Google seems chopping the N1 price!

So, no... I'm not a proponent of either phone at the moment. But I am pro-Android! I'm waiting for the X10 to drop.
