Looks like I need to unroot! How?

Completely safe. You can use HTC sync and goto HTC.com and get the ruu file from there and use HTC sync to run it. Sorry I can't go into more detail but I'm about to leave for the night. But wanted to at least give you peace of mind that it can be done and isn't very difficult. There other ways to do it as well if you need help with that I can try and help later.

The HTC site is confusing. They list an RUU file but it just says "Hero" and not the Sprint or CDMA Hero, so I could brick my phone.

Does anyone know which is the correct file or have a link to it? I'm afraid to screw this up.

First before you unroot, what does Sprint need to do, do you have to send them your phone, are you bringing it in for repair ?? If not there is no need to unroot, if they need to send a refresh signal then there is no need to unroot. Let us know before you unroot

Changed phone number. Phone needs to program for the new number but does nothing wit a custom rom. (CM 7 stable) If there is a way without unrooting I'm all for it.

Yes, either restore your Stock Rom when you rooted, or create a nandroid back up abd flash a sense base Rom, like Liquidsense 2.1

There isn't a stock ROM nandroid because my brother gave me this phone so it was already rooted. No such file on the SD card. Is a Sense based rom like Liquidsense 2.1 something that would work to update a new phone number by programming the phone like Sprint tells me to do?

If you absolutely want to RUU back then her you go

HTC Hero (Sprint) 2.1 Software Update | 05.19.2010

WARNING: Installing this software will erase your current user data.
Download via FTP (118 MB)
I don't want to unroot, but am not understanding what you are posting. If I install a Sense based rom like you suggested then can my phone be programmed with the new phone number using the instructions they tell me and I won't have to unroot? Or do I have to unroot? If so, are there step by step instructions to unroot?

Liquidsense is another Rom, like GB, but it is bases on the stock rom, this way they can have you program your number on it by phone, it will allow you to do the same as if it was not rooted. You boot into recovery, create a Nandroid back up of your current Rom, then do a full wipe and flash Liquidsense, then reboot, then call sprint and have them program your number from the phone, once done, simply restore your current rom and your good to go

Yes if they are going to walk you through programming your number on the phone, simply flash the Liquidsense rom as I mentioned and you can do so, and then once done simply restore your current rom

If you want to get back to stock quickly there is an easier way than using HTC Sync and the RUU executable. You can just flash the stock ROM via HBOOT.

Go here and get the file and follow the instructions in the thread: [RUU] Official 2.31.651.7 in ZIP Format, Flashable from Fastboot - xda-developers . That being said, it looks like DonB has you taken care of in your situation. But, the above information is always useful.

So let us know what happened and how it worked out
I had a chance to flash Liquidsense last night but not to get with Sprint right away. Finally got with Sprint and they walked me through the programming. This time the programming came up and allowed me to tap in the new phone number and some other number they gave me. Then chose to commit the changes and the phone rebooted. The rep was confused by the "commit to changes" notification but that was when I pressed "Menu" since a popup for either "Done" or "Save" did not come up like she expected. But it did not do something right and my phone is not connecting so it can't make the test call number they gave me or even call other numbers. They tried calling me and the phone won't receive calls either. They had me program it again after they changed the phone number again, just to see if that phone number was bad, so they walked me through the same steps to program the phone and I did it all, but it still does not work.

Great! This looks so much easier and faster. Looks like I will have to unroot so I am going to try this method and see if that works. Then I will get with Sprint later and see if the programming works when the phone is unrooted.

It should of worked, it has for many others before, weird. Well let us know how the RUU HBoot works out for you and keep us posted of the progress, be interested to see what happens, but if I recall I believe you need to be S-Off to be able to do this

Nope, you do not need to be S-OFF. That is the beauty of this flashable RUU.

I have used it myself with S-ON and it works perfectly. It truly is a quick and easy way to get back to stock.
The .zip file to unroot seems to have worked. After rebooting I got a message for a system update, so the phone is downloading that now. I will get with Sprint again and see if the programming works this time. Thanks again for that file!

You are quite welcome. I am glad that it worked for you.

It is always nice to find an easier way to do something. Cheers.

You also didn't need to do the update, you could of saved yourself some time, as you will be rooting it again
