Root Getting into Droid X

So my dad has a droid x that he has been having problems with and after seeing what I can do with my phone he's asked me to look into doing the same for his. I've looked up the guides all over the internet but I am seeing a lot of inconsistencies that worry me.

My phone is an original droid that I have modded left and right(and have some experience modding winmo before this), but I did not originally root it nor install the recovery(I did change it to clockwork later using the app). My concern is there especially with what I have heard of how subsequent motorolas after mine have been locked down. I see programs like z4root claiming to have a simple solution to rooting it, but what about the recovery? Can I just download clockwork recovery and install it from within or is there more to it? I've heard stuff about using bootstrappers which I know nothing about.

After that I want to get a custom rom on it, but there does not seem to be the selection that I've come to expect for my and other phones. Is there no cyanogen mod for the droid x or am I just missing it? Though an updated/optimized stock(I guess you call it AOSP or something in the android world) rom may be better for his purposes. I know the phone needs a better kernel than the one it has now. What are the "best" roms for the droid x?

His phone is running 2.2.1 from what I assume was the official update, if that matters. I would just like to get some clarification from a person rather than an unspecific guide since this is not my phone I would be messing with. I appreciate any help anyone can give.

first of all...welcome...

you've come to the right place :D

Z4root is a 1-click root app that works great on our phones running Froyo...def a must if you're going to start modding...

as for "bootstrapper" its just the program that allows you to boot into Clockwork Recovery on our devices...you would want the DroidX Bootstrapper from the market ($2)....although the official Gingerbread update is on the way...and if it behaves like the leaks we have had for the past weeks then you will need the Droid2 Bootstrapper

After that I want to get a custom rom on it, but there does not seem to be the selection that I've come to expect for my and other phones. there is no cyanogen mod because nobody has been able to crack the bootloader....

As for other ROMS there are a bunch out there...every one you ask will have a different opinion on which is best...we can get into that after covering the basics...

as for AOSP...in reality that wouldn't be very "stock" at all for a Droid X...unlike your OG Droid (which has vanilla or AOSP Android stock) we have a "theme" or overlay over our Android called "Blur"

I know the phone needs a better kernel than the one it has now. What are the "best" roms for the droid x?
unfortunately we will never know most likely...there are no better kernels for the X...because again, nobody has yet been able to crack the bootloader...

keep the questions coming!

How involved do you want to be with the upkeep of his phone?

I ask because the official update seems to be around the corner. Your dad will feel like he has a brand new phone when that hits. And because he's already stock the upgrade path will be simple.

After that hits you may get Ginger Break for root. Then apply a rom such as the final build of Apex 2 for GB.

I'd leave you're dads stock for a while and if he still has problems after this update then jump on it.

Unless of course you just want to tinker with his phone for your own enthusiasm.
