HTC Gingerbread update.

The easiest way to tell is to stick the build number into google. If it's branded you'll see a load of mentions of that network.

Putting yours in shows no mentions of a network, and the RUU for that firmware is: RUU.Ace.HTC.WWE.1.72.405.3., WWE standing for world wide edition and therefore an unbranded firmware :) You both knew that already of course, but that's how I usually go about telling.

That was my afterthought too. I thought that as Orange were so desperate to get the handset out for launch, they sent a load of handsets out with the base HTC software on.

Looks unbranded yeah?

Exactly same as my, as I said my works on O2 got from CPW

Well I got mine factory based unbranded direct from HTC. I ain't got my update but i'm not worried at all, i'll get it when I get it :).

My main concern is how far will HTC go updating wise with this phone?..Will it go to 3.0 eventually?, will it stop at 2.3?..It's something that isn't clear within HTC.

At the rate HTC are releasing phones I wouldn't be too surprised if we never see 3.0, tech moves so fast the DHD will be dated by then :(

Ok, so it appears as though HTC & the networks may have a different opinion of what constitutes a branded and an unbranded handset. Whilst I have no orange bloatware on my phone, my build number is still 1.72.405.3, according to HTC, I still have a branded handset.

It also looks like the rollout is taking place over the course of a month as opposed to a few days -

He could be wrong, I got my handset a few days after it was released so it might not have any of the orange build, but HTC still class it as branded.

I also got mine soon after release, from CPW, and it is unbranded and unlocked. I have the same build number as you .... Oh, and no update yet.

Just on to HTC Live Support there - told me that Gingerbread is currently rolling out for unbranded DHDs in Ireland but that it might take a few days to cycle through IMEIs.

Still pure and utter balls, unbranded shop bought Desires should not be the ones to fall behind the update curve! I think what you hear from HTC Tech Support/Facebook/Twitter is all smoke and mirrors and the dates and times should be stated:

SOON

I thought all IMEI are tied to your network.. so when say for example your phone is lost, you contact your network provider and then they will bar your phone via the IMEI number that is tied to your phone... so in theory the only way to know your handset is branded is through the ROM installed on your phone.

I bought my phone branded from Orange

I then unbranded it and its running the below software:-

Version: 2.2
Build Number: 1.32.405.6 CL278359
Software Number: 1.32.405.6

I am aware that the unbranded handsets outside of Ireland will not receive the updates yet. But I am interested on how long I will likely have to wait.

From reading the posts, I hear a lot of talk about the IMEI numbers of the phone. Does this mean that even though I am using the stock ROM I will have to wait until Orange release Gingerbread before I can download it?
