So i am reading a lot on the samsung Galaxy s ii but...they have different info, so is it a 3g or 4g

I just ordered the galaxy s ii through expansys-usa.com and also reading a lot about this phone on different websites. Some of them says is a 3g and some says a 4g? so which one is it?

okay so last year there was the GALAXY S.
A little later they released the GALAXY S 4G. Same phone, just with 4G capabilities.

Now the GALAXY S II has been released which isn't 4G. But it's still soooooo amazing :)

Part of the problem when it comes to 4G, is their is no official standard defining one unified definition of 4G. Competitive pressures have all carriers claiming they are 4G.

Presently each of them are all at a different stage, therefore my opinion is its simply too early. Give them six months at least, therefore I don't use 4G as part of my decision making process currently. I evaluate all other aspects of the phone.

It should get at least what t-mobile and att are calling 4g. LTE for verizon it can't do out of the box, so noone really knows. I know nothing about what sprint is calling 4g.

So to answer your question, true 4g, as far as the most widely accepted standard goes (100mbps for mobile platforms, 1gbps for stationary platforms), no it isn't, nor is any phone, but it will do what most of the phone companies are advertising as 4g, meaning HSPA+, maybe LTE, etc etc.

The international GSM version has HSPA+ maxed at 21Mbps. When it comes to U.S, T-mobile and AT&T will get that radio too. Given that they made WiMax for Sprint last year (Epic 4G), I think wimax will come to Sprint as well.

The biggest question is for Verizon, which is pushing 4G LTE now. It requires fairly large radio chip for LTE phones (Tbolt, Charge, Revolution are all thick). So we don't know if SGSII will have 4G LTE or only come with 3G CDMA for Verizon.

thx for all the inputs, i wanted to know because I am currently on AT&T unlimited 3g plan... i talked to them and they told me if my phone is 4g, I will have to select the new data plan and can no longer use my unlimited 3G data plan.

Really? So if you have phones like Atrix, Inspire, then they will charge more for the data plan than other 3G phones? That sucks for me because I'm considering switch to AT&T from Verizon to get SGSII.

Not for you, cuz i believe 3G and 4G data plan on AT&T are the same.

15-200mb
25-2gb
45-4gb with tether

but i am an old customer of AT&T who still has the unlimited data, if i upgrade phone that is 4G capable, i need to change to one of the above data plan...

my Galaxy S II should be here by the end of next week, i will see whats up when i put my sim card in there.

You can migrate your unlimited to a "4G unlimited". I did this right online when I bought my Atrix. There was an option for Unlimited 4G, since I had an existing unlimited plan - that was through AT&T online (vs. Amazon, etc.).

In fact, my 4G unlimited is still probably active, even though I returned my Atrix!

Thanks for clarification. That sounds better.
The reason I'm considering switch to AT&T is that chance of VZW getting SGSII with LTE is slim this year. Also we don't know when they will be getting it if at all and it's highly likely they would cripple this great phone with their bloatwares, Bing and spec reductions like smaller memory Fascinate. Too bad, their network is still the best in coverage, reliability and but they ruin phones.

lets hope it will migrate.

Yeah, I was a little nervous, but I wound up contacting support and they said to just follow through, choose the "new" plan Unlimited Data (for 4G) and everything worked just fine.

Honestly, I rarely push even 1GB of data, and that's tethering for a few days in a high usage scenario (like work). I think I'm headed to Verizon soon anyway.
