Help Offical Moment Update

/lurker mode off
Quick update from Dayton, OH. I've been lurking for a couple months after my wife got her Moment, and I followed recently with one of my own a couple of weeks ago. My weekend project was going to be the Zefie updates, until the announcement of the official release. I'd be comfortable taking care of my phone on custom software, but my wife is not a techno-phile and would rather have it done for her. Since I don't want to spend twice the time updating two phones, and don't want to manage separate version threads in the same household, we opted for the sprint store upgrade. I took my phone in first, as if they bricked it I'm still inside 30 days and don't have much stuff on it yet.

Arrive at the Miamisburg store (across from the Dayton Mall) at about 10:40. No line, and the reps on the floor and the tech knew what I was talking about and took my phone straight back. 10:55, I'm done and out the door with the new release. I had a few initial data connection issues, but I had the same thing after setting up the phone new at Best Buy. Almost like the data profile hadn't been populated to the phone. So, I powered down, powered up and ran self diag, updated profile, updated PRL, and power cycled again. From there, I haven't noticed any issues.

Battery held in the green above what appeared to be 50-60 percent during 3+ hours of downloading apps, reconfiguring Touchdown, messing around on the browser, etc. Google maps placed me in the field across the street with the GPS and Wifi turned off, so I'd say that the cellular location assist is working. Haven't noticed any significant differences, but the keyboard seems to work fine, and I continue to be very happy with the Moment.

Next up will be the wife's update when I have some more time. I'll report back if we notice anything different with hers.

Wow. I hope this isn't the way it's going to be for the 2.1 upgrade coming in in 1Q, 2045... ;-?

Here's my experience so far with calling "service center" sprint stores:

1 - "We don't have the update yet" ...booooooo!
2 - "Oh you can do the update OTA!" to which I say "No you can't. Are you wearing a neon green helmet?" to which she says "Our tech will be in at 2 but I have SEEN the OTA update in person and done it myself" to which I add "No habla ingles puta".
3 - "Bring in the phone and leave it with us for a week" - A WEEK??!! SRSLY? OMGWTFBBQ!

This has been an enlightening expereince in regards to kernel updates and how badly executed this rollout has been. If you live AT the sprint headquarters, apparently you can get the update from the CEO himself. As for the rest of America outside of the Dust Bowl, the level of idiocy exponentially grows as you radiate outward towards the coasts. I live in CA, which would mean that Sprint tech's out here just stand around making grunting noises, eating corn and throwing their feces aginst the wall and calling it a "kernel update".

Jack-offs.

This post made my day...

back on topic though. I took my phone off charger around 7:30 this morning. Battery meter still showing 90% (haven't used it much all day except a few re-downloads from the marketplace). So it appears the meter is at least partially addressed/fixed. It will be nice but I've gotten use to not believing it anyways. :)

just to put in some more info.... i've noticed an update in settings where you can check for firmware updates. instead of just firmware there is now an option to "update android". sprint knows that we'll be getting 2.1 and has made the door available for samsung so we can receive the damned thing. GREAT!

also, people with issues with techs, tell them they have to use that sprint tools program on their computer, connect your phone and it will show the update. it's there. they just have to look for it.

i'm not convinced on the battery yet. i started today with an 80% battery and i'm down to 15% with fairly normal use. i know that my location is on and i have twidroid running. i have my settings set for every 4hours for updates on everything so it really shouldn't be that low. i'm going to have to go everything again tho. i know there's apps that need to be adjusted since all my amazing settings have been wiped out. oi.

I just got the update. I'm in Rockville, MD and the staff at the local Sprint store we're well aware of the update and told me to bring it on in. So I brought the phone in and it took about an hour. It did wipe your phone except for the contacts. But even if it wiped your contacts, they're all on Gmail anyway.

I MUST say, the biggest improvement I've found on the phone right off the bat is the response time entering text using the physical keyboard when texting and such. Also, improved response time when scrolling using the little optical pad. There is no delay at all now. Can anyone else tell the difference? Everything else (Exchange, Gmail, and other apps) came online with no problems. SUCCESS!

Does this mean that those of us that didn't get the sprint update might not be able to get 2.1 OTA?

Hilarious. You might want to consider decaf. The tech at my store did say it was ota for a very limited set of phones so they could verify it wasn't bricking phones. For the general public in store was the only sure option right now. Hoever it sounds like YMMV with the quality of your store personnel. Mine were great, but there have been a lot of horror stories.

So far so good for me. Battery seems ok but I'm curious how it performs on a full day.

Anyone using moxier? I cant get the wifes work calendar to sync. It gets her mail and contacts but no calendar.

everything else seems to work.

I had that problem... what I did is clear my account info in moxier (effectively deleting my account client-side) and reboot, then go back into moxier and re-sync. The second time it was successful in actually syncing my calendar.

Oh yeah, has anyone suffered any "airplane mode" issues once they've received the official update? Or the CL14 update a la Zefie even? I'd imagine that that's something they'd want to fix, as it could almost be a liability issue in an extreme circumstance (although I'm sure there's clauses in the contracts we all sign absolving sprint/samsung of that sort of thing).

LOL! I pretty much had the same experience out here in Northern California. How difficult would it have been for Sprint to have verified the number of repair centers that are cleared to roll out the update PRIOR to the announcement that it was available?? How difficult would it have been to have contacted all the sprint repair centers across the country to ensure that everyone was on the same page meaning that the hardware and software is in place and that the technicians themselves have been properly trained to do so and have all the required tools to carry out this action?? A week prior? Two weeks prior?

Does Sprint need a project manager for this concept? If so, excellent. I'm currently unemployed and so your in luck Sprint HR. As incredible as it seems, I know how to use a phone (I know, its a gift). Not only do I know how to use a phone, I can speak to people and ask questions plus I know how to read and write AND use email!! Amazing is not?

I'm sure with my ultra uber powers being so mindblowing as it is to the Sprint Corporation and its shareholders, I'm here to officially announce my availbility to Sprint as their uber smartphone software update deployment project manager for a yearly incredible low bargin basement price. Of course, Sprint will have to pick up the tab for all my coffee drinkage and provide free 4G WIMAX to me for as long as I am employed with Sprint.

Whaddayah say Sprint? Let's make a deal. ;-)

I must have missed all the talk of this, what exactly is happening? I've had my moment since release day and it's never done anything odd w/ regards to airplane mode.

*edit... Wow, don't know how I missed the airplane mode thread... but just quickly glanced, never had mine do anything like that before update or since.

No one knows why sprint is doing it this way.. ask the store..
If you didnt catch on at the bottom of that thread.. it says it should be baseband verision 4.OS.CL and the one we are using is 8.OS.CL ... no idea what hte difference is yet...
The difference is that the one we are using now is 8.OS.CJ05 and the one we upgrade to is 4.OS.CL14.
Some of these differences include...
Some Fixes, Feature Updates and Enhancements
1. Implementing Network Assist GPS to allow indoor location fix
2. Several 3rd party apps being updated including VVM, NFL/NASCAR, and Sprint TV
3. Change to Emergency Dial on lock screen
4. Hard Reset available on recovery mode: Remove and replace battery. Press Volume down and press send and end keys until reboot option pops up. Scroll to Wipe data/Factory Reset and Press OK.
5. Various improvements made to battery life.

This is great, just great. Sprint gets everyone hyped up and now they don't even follow through. Ughh. I think i might go back to my Sidekick 09' Or The Motorola Droid.

Oh they are following thru - its just that the execution is poor. Important thing is that the update is out there and eventually will go OTA.

I'd be even more frustrated if there were no progress, but atleast this is some. Disgusted by the calibre of folks at their stores and their ability to communicate with them though...has nothing to do with the Moment.

i am reading on twitter that some people are being urned away from stores because rumor has it the update is causing some phones to brick

Been reading here for a while....figured I'd join and post.

Just tried to get my phone updated at my local sprint store. I was the first one they had request it. After about an hour I left the store with a new phone still on CJ05. They bricked my original. As my replacement was being activated the employee helping me said that the techs were reading their email after bricking my phone and found an email telling them not to update any Moments due to several being bricked by the update.
