Just ordered the Motorola Atrix from Orange which should arrive tomorrow so this is the Hero's last full day. It has been a good friend completely transforming my expectation of smartphones. It is now nearly two years old and to be honest is starting to struggle. The battery is going fast and if I was to keep it would have to be replaced. I have accumulated a number of apps over the time and the phone is now starting to lag quite badly and struggles for memory particularly during updates but it has become a much loved friend and will be missed. It will be interesting to see if the Atrix can take it to the next level.

As a heavy overseas user have been able to drive a deal on the Atrix with Orange. The business solo 35 18m will renew at

....Also credit to Orange Business.....

My orange business contract is upgradeable on the 20th, I'm leaning towards the Atrix. Please post back after a few days and let me know how you get on with it. I'm running gingerbread on my Hero so was thinking that the Atrix is only Froyo.

Just over a week in and now have the Moto more or less sorted.

The good news is that it is not messed with by Orange.I am not even sure if its locked but I haven't tried another sim. It certainly allows sideloading.

I have installed Launcher Pro and home switcher as I liked much of HTC Sense and LP lets you get much closer to that experience.

It is blindingly fast and makes the Hero look a slouch. The screen is great in my view and not too bright. I certainly haven't noticed the pentiles.

The work and play kit took a little setting up as the instructions to all the items are minimal in the extreme but now it is all working it is effective and the webtop is much better than I had been led to believe from the reviews. I have seen very little evidence of lag.

The one thing that caught me out is that the cheap car socket adaptor that worked fine with the Hero doesn't work with the Atrix. worse than that it actually drains the battery so on a long run yesterday the battery was on low before I realised what was happening and the phone was dead before I got home. I must treat myself to a proper car dock! Otherwise the battery lasts well managing a full day with ease. It has got quite hot once but that was I think because a bad app got stuck in a loop as I had to reboot.

Still waiting for the laptop dock should be tomorrow then some more tests!

The screen is quite big enough for me particularly as the case is quite slippery but I can just about get my thumb across to the far corner. So glad I didn't get anything bigger it also fits in the pocket nicely - better than the hero even though it is bigger.

The experience now I have LP is like a better version of the Hero without any constraints. I have four e-mail accounts all set up and can see them in a single field and as they are now all IMAP I only have to delete once.

So far a very worthy successor to the Hero and with Gingerbread and hopefully ice cream will not run out of puff as quickly as the Hero.

The other good point is that as I had hoped the Moto radio is much better than the HTC one so I am getting much less call issues even though I'm in a flaky area.

So now I have two HD screens in my home office with the second either giving me extra PC real estate for spreadsheets etc or easily switching to Cable TV or Webtop as needed - excellent!
