Can the Droid Charge do Voice over LTE (VoLTE)?

no it cannot. however the LG Revolution can.

that's partially right. No phone can do VoLTE at the moment, and the LG Revolution will NOT be doing VoLTE on launch either. Verizon made a test call at CES and it happened to be on an LG Revolution. This was done for demonstrative purposes only. Don't expect VoLTE till next year at the earliest.

You are partially right too. Revolution has the additional modem chip that allows VoLTE that other LTE phones don't have. That's why Verizon used Revolution to demo VoLTE. Of course, it's not available yet on LTE network until Verizon turns it on nearly next year, but revolution will be ready for that unlike Tbolt, Charge.

So the current crop of 4G phones (e.g., Tbolt/Charge):

1. Don't do voice/data at the same time
2. Won't be able to do it next year when VoLTE is rolled out?

They do voice and data at the same time, voice is currently done over the 1x network, and 4g for data so you can do both at the same time.

The Thunderbolt goes the extra step and supports SVDO-CDMA or Simultaneous Voice and Data Over CDMA as you do NOT have to be in a 4G area to do voice and data at the same time. On the charge you DO have to be in a 4G area to do voice and data at the same time.

and jinwons what chip is that exactly that make the Revolution support VoLTE and the Tbolt and Charge not? Give me proof that it is indeed the chip because afaik VoLTE can be implemented via software since after-all its just voip.

If I remember correctly it's L2000 modem chip that LG put in Revolution for VoLTE. I don't have links on it at the moment but will post here when I have chance.

Yea I was just wondering, I know the Tbolt uses the MDM9600 for LTE, and the Charge uses Samsung's own CMC220 LTE chipset, which who knows if that has the capability to do VoLTE if it is indeed hardware and not software.

Those dont say anything about how the L2000 chip is required for VoLTE, just that it had the honor of being the first phone to make a VoLTE call. You got something that specifically states VoLTE requires special hardware? Because like I said VoLTE is most likely going to be a software implementation like Wifi calling on T-Mobile phones.

Also not to mention some of that info is very outdated, for instance the Revolution can't record in 1080p as those articles state. The chipset is much too limited for that.

marketing ploy? all I know is the Revolution isn't all that special, so I don't see why they would have that as VoLTE capable and not say the DROID Charge which is the 1st DROID branded LTE phone.

I have been playing with a Revolution at work and it isn't all that special, I'd probably reccomend the tbolt over it since it has the same SoC MSM8655 and its the same price.

Plus why would they build specific hardware for VoLTE when they aren't planning on launching it(the service) till a year after the devices release?

Yup :D awesome job for a phone junkie btw

Wow, that's awesome job indeed.
I guess time will tell if VoLTE requires hardware chip or not. My reasoning was the fact that only LG revolution got that honor of first phone doing that while there are Tbolt, Charge that came out first with better recognized brand like HTC, Samsung.

Other than brand, what makes you prefer Tbolt than Revolution? To me Revolution is better on internal storage size, screen, battery and possibly camera. It also has HDMI out/mirroring that's not in Tbolt. Have you tested it yourself with Tbolt side by side on those things?

The Tbolt actually has a better screen than the revolution, same size and resolution, but we are talking TFT on the revolution, and Super LCD on the Tbolt. Revolution does have a slight internal storage advantage, about 4GB or so of more usable space, there ~12GB free on the internal out of the box. But the Tbolt comes with more memory out of the box with the inclusion of the 32GB sd card. Battery no idea yet, since I cant use it outside of work can't really tell how that is yet, and camera i havent tested out much yet. The HDMI out is a cool feature, it works the same as on the Charge. So some people could go either way when it comes to the Revolution and Tbolt, but Sense is a bit more polished over LG's touchwiz like UI.

Thanks for your feedback. But I like to add two things.
Regarding the display on both phone, the screen on Revolution is not normal TFT LCD. It's IPS/LCD, the same type as in iPhone but with lower WVGA resolution. It should have higher contrast, viewing angle than SLCD on most HTC phones. To me SLCD on HTC phones looks too dim, especially under outdoors.
Also I bet Revolution will outlast Tbolt in battery performance. The reason for second FCC was implementation of better power management according to recent reports and LG phones are usually better on battery than HTC. Tbolt battery is so terrible, so it's hard to do any worse than that. :)
