Root Rooting Gingerbread from Z4root

Hi all, I'm currently running Android Ver 2.2.1 or System Ver 2.3.340. A few weeks ago I rooted the device using Z4root, I only installed two apps for a rooted device since then, Wireless Teather (just to use as a back-up to my USB modem with unlimited data) and Adfree.

My question is: What is my best path to Gingerbread?

I would like to keep both apps working.

Also, when I go into the device setting / about phone and click on update device it returns that the device is up to date.

Sorry for the noobe question, but a lot of this is still confusing to me. Thanks for any help you might offer. James

I tried to follow the instructions in the link above but it something doesn't seem to be working.

I downloaded ROM Manager (Clockwork Recovery) from the market, installed it, and then pressed Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, chose the droidx phone.

It said Successfully downloaded ClockworkMod recovery.

Then I tried to enter recovery mode by pressing Reboot into Recovery.

It rebooted, but not into recovery. It was just a normal reboot. I tried pulling the battery, no luck. I cant get it to boot into recovery.

Also, do I just download the 2 files, put them into the root directory of the sd card then run them, one at a time in recovery mode?

I have Astro File manager on the droidx, can I use that to run the files?

I'm a little confused here. I think I have to figure out why it won't reboot into recovery.

You can use the above guide but beware you most likely will lose your tethering ability unless you pay verizon for it

Why would I loose my ability to tether? Does Gingerbread not allow it?

I'm not to concerned about it. I don't use it that often, nor do I use a lot of data while tethering. To me data is data. I'm already paying Verizion for an unlimited data plan (grandfathered in) for my USB modem, and unlimited data for both the droidx's. They shouldn't have a problem with an extra mb of data when they are getting $60 p/month on the USB modem, and 2 $30 p/month on both my droidx's. So that's $120.00 p/month from me in data, I'll hope that enough for them.

Thanks everyone. I now have a better understanding of what is involved, and and a better understand of the consequences.

I purchased the DROID 2 bootstrapper from the market just to support the developer (I know I could have gotten it for free), I downloaded both the zip files from the site above and copied them to my SD card. I'm all set to go. But I have decided to stop this process right here for now. I really don't want to loose the ability to occasionally tether. It was the reason I rooted in the first place.

If there is a compelling reason to go ahead anyway I'm open to hearing it. Is gingerbread so much better than froyo that it out weighs the tethering issue? What are the other big advantages to gingerbread anyway. I mean, I coming from a blackberry to the Droidx, and as you can imagine the difference is night and day. So for me, any android device is great.

yeah You want to be rooted don't you? If you wait and take the OTA from VZW as it stands there isn't a method to root it. You have to flash a pre rooted version. Another reason is because GB is night and day difference from Froyo

I just completed the install of the OTA I got this morning and EasyTether still works fine for me. It seemed a little slower to me, but none of the redirecting to ominous warning pages that some people seem to have.

On a possibly related note, I've been a VZW customer for about 15 years, so perhaps I signed my original contract before they added the "no tethering without a plan" clause?
