Help Basic question, sorry...

I've always wondered this and figured it was time to make sure. How do you tell what running? I know where you look. Under "manage applications" then "running"....

but when you click on the running program, what do you look for?

the only thing i see that either has "0" or a number is "Cache"

so is that it? if there is a number other than zero in Cache, it's running?

the reason i ask is because a certain app that i got out of an hour ago has 84.00kb in the Cache column....

Or if I'm wrong what do we look at specifically?

If it's running it will give you the option to force close at the top left. If its not running the force close button will be unavailable

Check out ZDbox in the market, it tells you what is running on your phone, has uninstaller, task killer its a good app,

Advanced Task Killer is what a lot of people use to view/stop apps that are running.

im not about to beat a dead horse here but task killers = FAIL.

you only need to kill rouge apps that are misbehaving. the app watchdog found in the market does this for you.

Task killers are fail because...? There are many many people on both sides of the fence, and I honestly believe there is no real right or wrong on the subject. It's all personal preference and what you've had experienced. What's the harm in installing the app and giving it a shot? You don't like it, or it's an issue, uninstall.

on top of that though, at the very least, it'll show you what's running, regardless of it you actually use it as a task killer per se. (Then again, I'm sure there are plenty of other apps out there too that just give a better view of what currently is running in your phone)

There are plenty of others. Watchdog being one of the better ones. It will notify you when an app is misbehaving and killing your battery.

As far ad the validity of task killers there are countless threads discussing it of which I have made my argument. Even Andy Rubin has stated task killers are not needed with android.
But that really isn't what the op was asking about here and I don't want to hijack his thread.

DigDug, don't worry about hijacking the thread at all......

like when people teach me things.

I know all about the task killer contraversy. I don't use them. Especially with Froyo.

But i thought that when you looked at a running app (i do realize the "force close" thing) that there was a number you looked for to see if it was taking up too much juice? so i can see what app is running and using too much energy (even though i never opened it)

what do the numbers under "Cache" mean? some are zero and some have amounts??

the number listed under cache is stored data. It has nothing to do with how much the app is using your battery.
