I have 2.3.4 GB and ive done all the tweaks and such for battery improvement i have a fully charged battery not even on wifi. Just on screen and already says 97. What could this be how can i improve battery life im running 171 691 in cpu. No animations widgets nothing runs fast but just not sure whatelse. Ive done the wipe battery stats too. I heard the radio thing is something that can be tweaked but not sure i want to do that. Pretty much everything off in background too and data. In running applications i have 81 mb used 86 free. Internal in total 160 and 120 avail. Battery is going down without even using it.

A few suggestions:

Use SetCPU or similar to downclock the processor when screen is off.
Dark/black wallpaper reduces the power consumption (srsly!)
Hook up to open wifi APs as much as possible as it requires less power to stay connected to one of those than maintain a data connection.

You don't actually say what your battery life is though, so it's impossible to compare with that of any other handsets.

Battery life is an issue for all smartphones! You may want to try some battery saving app like JuiceDefender, which are basically tools to improve the energy-efficiency of the phone. JD for example optimizes battery consumptions by automatically managing the most power-draining components (GPS, WiFi, etc.) so that they are used *only* when needed, rather than left running all the time for no particular purpose. It also gives access and full control over loads of energy saving options otherwise unavailable (advanced scheduling options, location aware WiFi controls, background sync, CPU frequency controls, the list goes on).
Hope this helps :)

Battery life is an issue for all smartphones!

I get more than 24hrs from a full charge in my Hero. As I'm usually able to top it up overnight battery life for me isn't a major issue. Others' mileage will surely differ though, and that's where the fun begins. ;)

Disabling stuff is a compromise between consumption and functionality. For example, I only use wifi at home - there's no nearby open AP at my work - but I have wireless constantly enabled for location-finding. GPS I also leave enabled as it's only active when required by e.g. Maps. I leave mobile data and 3G enabled but either disable auto sync or set long sync intervals unless I'm at home. However I set a very short screen timeout, dial the display brightness down manually, and downclock my CPU drastically when screen-off.

Your post highlights one of the advantages of Android - the range of customisation and configuration available to the user. It can take a bit or experimentation and trial-and-error to find what works for you, but it's well worth the effort.

I also get 24 hours. As slug says smart phones generally drain battery. Learn to live with it a little. Personally I always carry around a spare battery in my wallet (for those weekends away when you might not get chance to charge). The big drainer for me is when I use the camera or play games.

I've also noticed that battery drain increases significantly after installing a new app (or updating). If you go a couple of days without installing a new app you should notice increased battery life.

I've tried all the JD and programs that say they help manage battery usage. I'm not going to say that they don't work because I've not studied it close enough, but if you go through all the tweaks I reckon you may get an extra couple of hours back - not worth the hassle in my opinion.

My twopenceworth!

Guys,

Really, you need to find a good, stable configuration for your phone. A good rom makes your lazy Hero and its hardware to fly. I had Froydvillain 1.7.3 overclocked at range 19-691 on smartass governor (using flykernel 11a) and conservative at screen off profile. My hero was flying and i had 24+ hours of usage with some calls, some updating and installing apps, some sms, some wifi. Like Slug said, i don't have wifi or network internet all day nor GPS. These are the 3 drainers of our hero. If you have wifi on for all day and play with it 1 hour, you will see your battery drained at 50-60% from 100%. Its no surprise, really.

Now I have installed elelinux's CM7 build, GB rom 2.3.4 android, set it up today, and it flies. Really it flies. When i long press on my hero's screen to set up widgets, the pop up screen comes within 5 ms. When i want to enter in screen preview, it makes it without hick ups.
I also run Go Launcher Ex launcher. Maybe this makes some diference. Also, no Sync running in background.
