***Official OTA First Impressions Thread (non-rooted stock)***

Both my wife's phone and mine updated overnight. Mine has functioned flawlessly, and I'm enjoying the improvements.

My wife's phone, however, completely crashed. Every time we would restart it, it would shut itself off immediately. Took it to Verizon, where they were able to get the device to stay on, but no matter what, they couldn't get any wireless service. They decided to overnight a new phone.

Strange.

After reading above I did a test for LED notifications and found that my Gmail account notification settings had been changed and the LED was not checked. My other email account settings stayed the same.

Where is the LED notification setting for gmail? I only see status bar notifications (checkbox), ring tone, vibrate, and checkbox for whether a notification is received for each new email.

Thanks,
Brian

I was stock, unrooted FroYo. Got my OTA update yesterday afternoon.

The good:
I dig the new tray icons. Not only that there are four of them, but that they are customizable. This is the one thing I wanted a launcher previously, but hated the way most launchers did everything else, so I just ignored it. This is a great improvement.

The dark notifications bar. Took me a bit to get used to, but I think I like it.

The ability to clear individual notifications. Never thought about wanting it, love that I can do it now.

Profiles.

Blue scrolling "you've gone to far" haze. Others seem to be bitching about it. I dig it.

The whines:
My LED is not working for native apps, specifically. Notifications from TweetDeck give me an LED, but not emails or text messages. Have not tried a battery pull yet.

My "Gmail Unread Count" widgets did not work at first. Tried a reinstall to no avail. I have emailed the developer. I've reinstalled them a second time and they *appear* to be working right now. We'll see if they continue to update.

My Fancy Widgets clock seems to lag a bit when I come back to the home screen. Lame.

How do you customize the tray icons?

My bad, going back to check, when I looked first time Email notifications was not checked. I mis-spoke to that being the LED notification.

Wow just realized this, while watching a youtube video, you can search and the video will still play while you type (Dunno if this happened pre-gingerbread)

More notably, you can now put the phone to sleep and the video will continue playing. I think this is a nice perk =) It's ideal for those who want to listen to a song on youtube but never liked having the video playing.

I ran the .588 release, official .596 through sd install, sbf'd back to .340 and installed a fresh OTA today.

First things first. I really appreciate gingerbread and the changes that have been discussed. I feel as though I have a new phone and the misc. crap Verizon puts on the phone isn't in my way. One word... WOOHOO!

Secondly I can tell you that after a fresh install this droid x runs smooth. I'm not advising anyone to go this route but I would do it the same way all over. No issues with the keyboard, everything is running great. I'm not running LPP or any other launcher as I like the blur interface (flame on).

Edit: only complaint is the hard key back lights are to bright.
Can you explain for this NOOB what a "fresh install" means?

I'd like it a lot more if it didn't kill my older version of the Weather Channel, Sports Radio Droid, and Scanner Radio.

My Scanner Radio went a little flaky after the update (GB all stock), but I was able to get it going again. If it's not connecting to any stations, then try the following:

  • From the Home screen in Scanner, hit the Menu button then "Settings"
  • Select "Player Settings"
  • Select "Streaming Method"
  • If "Android Media Player" is selected, then try "Custom Player"

Mine started streaming right away after I made this change.

Back on topic.

At first, my notification LED wasn't working, like many others reported. Last night it started working again for the SMS. (I use K-9 for mail, and that was never affected.)

I like the "Sleep" function on the power down menu.

What happened to "Party Shuffle" in the stock media player? I think that feature is gone. That was nice for randomly playing all music in your DX. You can still do it, but it's not as easy as just clicking a button.

The new text select method is way better than the old one.

I like the alphabet that shows up on the far right in Contacts. You can quickly select a letter, or drag through the alphabet. Is the "sort by last name" a new feature? This update was the first time I have been able to do that.

First impression: horrible

I am stock and unrooted, I was on the stock froyo and running "go launcher" which I was pretty happy with. Got the OTA update from this morning, immediately had problems doing anything with my DX. Did a battery pull and hoped for the best, notice constant lag that is way more than I ever had with Froyo. I ended up using the default launcher and uninstalling all the go launcher/sms/contacts apps, but still have lots of lag. None of my music apps work (stock, 3, Amazon MP3, doubletwist). I have done literally 20 battery pulls today due to locked up phone. I have received phone calls and have been unable to answer any of them. The battery has been getting sucked down like crazy, I have plugged it in for 30-90 min 3-4 times today, and I usually just charge overnight while I am sleeping.

Frankly, I can not believe what is happening, I loved my DX yesterday, just plagued with it locking up once or twice a week, looked forward to gingerbread as the "new" thing, now I am hoping there is a way I can go back!

I'm having all of the same issues. I can't get a single music app to work including stock. Now I am unable to download any apps from the market. Battery is draining rapidly without much use, and i've probably had to do >15 battery pulls. This update has rendered my phone useless.
