Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

Well I know this update left a lot to the imagination, but I'm glad to see that a lot of people are seeing some dramatic performance boosts from the update, I think the biggest one I'm seeing on some posts is that 3G reception is better which drives me crazy at times, so that alone is a huge plus to me along with better battery life. I'm rooted/ROM'd so I will still hold out for a nice ROM to come out which includes the update.

Thanks a lot guys for sharing your experiences thus far.

People who are having issues with Swype, just put the cursor in the center of the word and hit the Swype button, it brings up the Swype menu to change/add/delete word from Swype. It's actually much easier now.

So far I like the update. Some of the applications run faster, and I installed it on my bosses phone and he says it's working wonders for the battery.

Oh, also, the home screens rotate to landscape mode now . . .FINALLY! :)

No landscape of home screen here

Ditto. Wouldn't that be something that would come with the new version of Sense (which we're not getting) versus the Gingerbread update?

So far, no complaints here. Phone is definitely snappier when moving through apps...can't speak to battery efficiency yet, but my fingers are crossed. All in all, happy to get a gift from HTC on the one year birthday of my launch day Evo. :)

The only way for me to fix the the folder icons defaulting back to generic, as well as voice mail indicator issue was to turn off "Fast Boot" in the Applications menu. It's a real bummer when they give you a feature that is half ass useful.... (Useless?)

(Correction ... After re-booting phone, the Icons are back to generic again and Fast Boot has no affect. Damn!)

I also noticed a slick new(?) GPS Navagation program called TeleNav GPS Navigation is now included. I really like the way it gives you three or four mapped choices of the route, and you decide which one to take instead of forcing it to "Recalculate".

I noticed the browser is different in the upgrade. However it apears the zoom issue is still present. When you are default zoomed out on a page and want to zoom in the browser auto adjusts the screen and places you in a different location than where u intended to be zoomed In on. Has anyone found a setting or fix for this with gingerbread ?

Check if you have your text size set to anything other than 'normal' because with zoom the size of the text changes when zooming. If it's set to 'normal' I can double tap a point on the page and it zooms to that spot.
Unless there is flash on the page, especially if not quite loaded yet, and then all bets are off!

Sure about that?

Thats one thing I was hoping for, but mine sure isn't doing that after the update.

That's actually been available for download for a while now. It was offered if you went into Sprint Navigation as an available upgrade. I think I first downloaded it back in March. The new version is a bit nicer! :)

Ive noticed when using the stock web browser animated files like gif files don't play like they did before 2.3 update. Anyone else notice this or am I the only one having this problem?

There is an "Enable GIF Animation" option in the browser in 2.3 that is UNCHECKED by default. It's a nice touch as it would definitely be useful on some sites, lol.

We are aware of an incompatibility between our Android app and HTC's 2.3 update for the HTC EVO 4G. We are investigating the issue.

Concerning Netflix: I uninstalled and reinstalled, and now the app isn't on the market app but there's an install link to it on the market webpage. However, when I click install it give me two options to select, an HTC device or a Sprint Device. Either one I select says it's unsupported. Bummer. Has anyone else had this issue?

Things I haven't seen mentioned here that really excite me:

NO START UP APPS. At least not stupid ones like Sprint Navigation, Sprint Zone, Sprint TV, Nascar, and all those other crappy stock apps. SOOOOOO glad this is gone!

Another: Less apps run in the background!!! This was one of my biggest pet peeves with my phone. I don't use Facebook (anymore) or Twitter (never have), I'm not a stock broker, I don't use Latitude, and I don't use the Android mail app. So I'm very thrilled that these programs aren't running in the background. I used to see them 24/7 whenever I was in the App Manager. Sometimes I'd see Facebook for Android and Facebook for HTC running side by side. I'd also occasionally see the Android News app even though I never used it and those nasty Sprint apps randomly pop up in my Running Programs list. No matter how many times I'd force close them or tweek their settings, they'd find they're way back. But I haven't seen those all day. The only ones I see there are what look like system processes and widgets that I have running - Yahoo Mail, Power Amp, etc.

ALSO - apps that didn't actually close or end aren't in that listed there anymore after I've formally exited them. The stock Android browser never seemed to fully exit, and neither did Astro. I'd push the back button until the app disappeared from the foreground, but I'd see it still running in the Running Apps list. Now they aren't there and it looks as if they're actually closing.

Bottom line: Gingerbread seems to have taken a big step forward as to how it handles its apps, especially the stock ones from the carrier and manufacturer. I've never been a Task Killer guy, but I'd check that list a lot to make sure my processes and services weren't sucking up my battery or eating up my processor. Unless the newly vamped Application Manager is lying to me, this is an improvement that I'm pumped about and I'm excited to see what it'll do for my battery life. I think it may also have something to do with the already obvious speed of my phone.

Anyone else know where I'm coming from?

Um, I still have nascar, sprint nav, sprint zone, etc...? Care to elaborate on what you mean by those not being there?

As for all the apps that would run in the background, like weather stocks facebook twitter etc., you could set those up not to sync before, so I'm not sure y that would've ever been a problem.

HTC, Sprint, and Google hope you are enjoying the latest update to a device that set the standard for all mobile devices to follow nearly a year ago(EVO 4G). Important to note that a water down version of Gingerbread be introduced first because of EVO 4G mass popularity. Functionaliity had to be first and for most. Repeating mistakes made by other carriers was not going to be acceptable by the EVO community. This update addresses some of the pressing concerns by the EVO community. Once we are satisfied no major issues are associated with current upgrade we will proceed with 2.3.4 If no major issues other than Netflix you can expect June 9th 2.3.4 OTA update.
2.3.4 will include:
1) Landscape for home screen
2) Gingerbread keyboard option
3) Further performance improvements
4) Video chat (Google)
5) Sense UI update

Like EVO 3D we are listening to what the expectations are from the community.
BSOD
P.S. Netflix will be updated and streaming ASAP as this issue is being resolved. Expect an update with in 24hrs at the latest Monday June 6th.
