Predictions/Thoughts on Sprint/Motorola Luncheon Announcements 12:30 - 2:30pm EST?

Only because I'd been waiting for someone to post info on it! :D

Alas, sounds like it's still Pentile -- from the CNet link (a few posts up): "The Photon's qHD display is quite fetching, though as we've discussed before, the way the subpixels are arranged makes the screen less sharp than it could be."

But a world phone? For a lot of people, that would still be worth it.

I read this quote on another website..."I have a feeling that Sprint customers all over have been given a front row seat to one of the hardest decisions of the summer – Motorola Photon or HTC EVO 3D?"
For me (currently have the original Evo) the 3D is not even an option. There is nothing about it that appeals to me. The Photon, however, does sound quite appealing. It would take a lot for me to upgrade as I have NO complaints about my Evo. This phone is definitely tempting though.

The world phone is definitely a plus and bonus for me. I just like having the option.

The main things that REALLY make this the upgrade I'm going to go with is 16gb internal storage w/ 1GB RAM (not even including SD card) and the kickstand! I'm not really too picky when it comes to screens because as long as they are clear and responsive, that's fine for my needs.

I'd love a world phone as well. But I've survived without it before, and I can again -- usually if I'm traveling to other countries it's for work and I'll either have a laptop+skype, or borrow a work phone. So it's not a huge necessity.

16GB internal is admittedly nice, but it's pretty cheap+easy to get a 32GB SD, so again, I'm not too fussed. I should go try out an Atrix and see what I think of an LCD Pentile in person. And I like the idea of a kickstand, but I'm likely to buy a dock for home and work anyway (assuming I get the EVO 3D).

Having said all that, I'm still really liking the Photon. I reading correctly that we're back to the nebulous "summer" release date again though?!

Again, darn Sprint for giving us too many good choices!
- EVO3D: qHD, 3D, HTC, Sense, unlocked
- Within: SAMOLED+, 32GB, thin (all assumed)
- Photon: qHD, world phone, Tegra, 16GB, locked?

Well the Evo 3d is dead, this is my next phone..

I'm surprised how quickly people are making up their minds about these choices. Nothing can substitute for the hands on trial in my opinion. Even better is the side by side in hand comparison.

Drex, you have been a staple in the Evo boards since you showed up, around the same time as I did I recall. I've always enjoyed your take on things. Hopefully you won't be a total stranger if you decide to get the Photon 4G.

I hope that qHD screen is Super LCD and not TFT like the Atrix. The Atrix has very washed-out blacks. If so, it may make for a tough decision between the Samsung Within and the Motorola Photon for me.

P.S.
That Virgin Mobile phone looks very nice for a prepaid device. At $25 per month, it would be a great deal if it were priced around $250. Even though it doesn't have 4G, they could do whatever Verizon did to the Thunderbolt to achieve simultaneous voice and data over EVDO.

I'm still likely to take a "wait and see" approach, once the "official" price and release date is announced for the Photon. What I'll likely be doing is, I'll do a pre-order for the Photon 4G, upgrade to that phone, and if after a weeks worth of use, I'll know for sure if it's the right phone for me. If not, I'll trade for the EVO 3D. As much as I like the specs on the SGS 2, I just can't get over how horrible Samsung's support had been for the EPIC, so until they show more consistency like HTC and Motorola (as far as support), I'm holding off on buying a Samsung phone.

Hahaha...I know, I know. Don't worry, Pyro. Even if I get the Photon 4G, i'll still likely be posting in both of the EVO boards. The community and convo in the boards has been just too great to ignore!

Craziest part of all of this is I never thought I would really get "addicted" to Android, but after a full year of EVO greatness, I can't see myself moving away from Android, unless Google somehow scraps the entire platform and their support of it (which I can't realistically see happening, but you never know how tech will change).

I think a lot of it is just the initial hype, people getting excited over something new and shiny. Once the hype dies, you won't see these reactions.

Maybe thats my problem, I try not to buy into hype ;)

It looks good but I still choose the Samsung Within over all, especially since Samsung gave the Samsung Galaxy S2 to the CM7 team so they can get it working on the S2. That's more than HTC or Moto has done for the part of the Android community that roots.

What about HTC's decision to not lock down bootloaders?

More on topic though, Its reported that the Photon 4G will in fact have a locked bootloader. Is this a deal breaker for anyone? I'm surprised at how much bootloaders have seemingly become a selling point and big news item among the different communities.
