Help Need some help with my brand new SGS

Hello all,

I have few questions to ask,

1. I have a brand new SGS bought a week back, looks awesome feels awsome in short its an awesome fone. It came with Froyo 2.2, now i heard that 2.3 is better when it comes to battery use and it uses less battery. So i tried to upgrade my SGS using KIES it said no update available. Den i read forums i got to know that many people have updated their SGS using KIES, so why is i am not able to upgrade?

And i have read that people are suggesting to upgrade using odin or other 3rd party softwares. Wanted to know is that safe?? i mean my apps and all will they get backed up??

Also is it worth upgrading from FROYO to GB i mean is GB that good??

Please let me know i am literally novice user with android.

Thanks in advance

If you use Odin to flash to Gingerbread you WILL lose all apps and settings.
Your best course of action is to root the phone first, then install Titanium backup from the market, and use that to back up your apps. I'd advise not to back up system data though as that can cause issues when restoring the phone after the upgrade.
