Auto On/Off App

Is there an app that can turn my Samsung Mesmerize on/off at specific times?

No. Not really. Once the power is off, it's off and only a press of the power button will turn it on. To conserve battery you can use an app like Tasker to shut off WiFi, data, gps, bluetooth, etc and turn them back on, but the phone is never really off

I know that when I had a BlackBerry, i had the timer set to shut off at like 2am and turn on at like 5am. Just to preserve battery life. Since moving to android, i had no idea how obscene that was. The battery on BlackBerry was incredible. I love my mez but the battery is horrible. I would love to have the ability to shut the phone off and turn on with a schedule.

I'm almost positive that if you turn your Android to airplane mode for 3 hours (which tasker can do) it will use less battery than shutting down and having to reboot the phone.
Yeah, this. If there's no connectivity then most apps just wont bother to do anything. With screen off and airplane mode on any android phone should be draining less than 1% per hour, if that.

As an alternative try an app called green power. You can set it to turn data/wifi on/off for periods, e.g. only on for 1 minute every 15, which can save masses of battery. The pro version lets you set different connectivity rates for daytime and nightime.

It was just a nice feature with the Blackberry phones, for those of us who did not have our phones at our bedside (and even if we did) to have the phone turn off at night and back on in the morning (at specific programed times) automatically, instead of doing it manually. There was a weekday setting and and a weekend setting. A feature that was built into the phone itself. I'm sure that the above mentioned options are an alternative, but not quite the same thing. Hopefully, someday this option will be available. Add to the wish list.

I'm willing to bet that Blackberry's form of "shut down" was very similar to airplane mode on some level.

If you're doing it to conserve battery, my vote would be Tasker, with a profile set up to go into airplane mode and turn off all background data.

^^This.

Any device that is truly off cannot know what time it is and perform tasks according to schedule. If it can resume to a fully active state without user interaction, then it's not off.

Not quite on/off, but you can use an app like Timeriffic (free!) https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alfray.timeriffic to automatically turn on & off airplane mode at specific hours. If you turn on airplane mode & silent mode at night, then turn off airplane & silent in the morning, it's almost as good as a full off/on.

Thanks for this app. I just downloaded it and it appears to work great. As to the blackberry auto on/off, it is a nice feature, to turn off the device if you are forgetfull. If you use your phone as a clock, this feature is useless. Being able to turn off data, other services and select certain vol. levels for notifictions, I would think would be of better use on a smartphone. Just my opinion.

On a PC, when turned off, the motherboard has a lithium battery to maintain the clock, and virtually all modern bioses have the ability to wake up on real-time-clock alarm. I use a pc running linux as a pvr, and it powers up/down regularly to make recordings. The pvr app (MythTV) writes the scheduled wake-up time into the bios and powers off. Do android phones not have some sort of bios mechanism? I've noticed mine keeps time when powered off; even if the time settings in the phone are set to manual (i.e. not using the cellular network for time management), so it must be doing it somehow. If there's no wake-up on rtc feature, then I guess it's not possible to automatically wake-up due to hardware limitation. Maybe a little food for thought for developers?
