Help Intermittent LTE

Came over from the OG Droid. I'm having issues with LTE and 3G cycling between each other, the problem seems exacerbated when using mobile hotspot, but occasionally occurs during regular use. I'm basing this off multiple stationary positions; I have good signal strength with 4-5 bars and a 74-80 dBm. A battery pull temporarily relieves the problem and there is no significant pattern on the timing of how long it lasts, but it eventually starts again. It's especially annoying during the use of hotspot.

Sorry if this has been discussed, searched and didn't find much. Also, I'm in Seattle, WA, so a good LTE market. Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Many many of us are suffering from the same problem. Don't hold your breath for a fix since I'm convinced this is a hardware problem that manifests itself in certain areas and not others. I think some areas have more solid 4G/3G areas than others and people in those areas don't see it at all.

But like you I can go from 4G to 3G to 1X to no data in a minute. It's really frustrating.

I would recommend DLing LTE switch. When my phone cycles down to 3g or 1x, I use LTE Switch and cycle it back to 4g. Works 90% of the time.

Do you guys have an automatic "Task Killer" running in the background? I had this problem when I was using ATK. I uninstalled it and haven't had my 4G signal drop.

Nope, sure don't. In fact I've never had a task killer other than the one that came with the phone. Verizon even gave me a brand new replacement phone and it behaves exactly like my first one. This is a systemic problem with 4G/3G in certain areas. In these areas the phones are incapable of holding on to a 4G signal and when they drop down to 3G or below, they can drop down in to a 'no connectivity' situation. I've had many instances where my wife's 3G only phone got data with no issues and my Charge got zippo. Does this have something to do with the towers not properly telling these phones how to switch from 4G to 3G or vice versa? I have no idea. Are these phones using a less sensitive radio that results in many situations where my wife gets a solid 3G and I get no data? I have no idea.

My street is shown as a solid 4G area according to the micro maps on VZW. By solid I mean not 'extended', not fringe, but a solid 4G area. Tell that to my phone. Within 1 minute I can go from 4G to 3G to 1X to no data. A nearby strip mall in my neighborhood is also shown as solid 4G and I can stand outside in the open and never receive a 4G signal.

Something is seriously wrong.

I don't see that in the Marketplace. Is this something connected with the phone being rooted? If so, I'm not rooted. What I can tell you is that I've used all of the other 'tricks', going in & out of airplane mode, switching between CDMA & LTE and the good ol' battery pull. All of these can restore 4G...for about a minute or two.

Again, this is only in certain areas. In many other areas I can get a perfectly fine 4G signal. But keep in mind that in the problematic areas my wife's Iphone4 on Verizon has no issues with data. So it's obvious the exact same signal is being handled quite differently by these two different phones.

I do not have any task killers running.

Yes, I have tried and still use the shortcuts, again, that is temporary fix. You are just forcing the signal to reacquire an LTE connection and then it will drop.

Seattle is pretty strong LTE market and my signal strength is very good so I don't understand what these "problematic areas" have that other markets wouldn't. Mine doesn't usually drop to no data, but goes back and forth between LTE/3G when stationary with a strong signal.

Like the first responder said, it looks like a hardware issue that's not going away anytime soon. Either with the network or the LTE chipsets themselves.

I have a theory about this and it all boils down to hardware or firmware.

I have a feeling that they designed the phone to switch to 3G the second the 4G gets slightly weak, as to save on battery life and not have the phone drain the battery pulling on a weaker signal.

An LTE only toggle would be great, for I like to watch streaming video before I go to bed, and can only put the phone (on the charger of course) next to my bed on the side that only receives 3G...that's right, on the right side of my bed I get solid 4G, on the left it constantly switches back and forth.

I think further confirmation of this is on the VZW forum website. Many times you'll get responses from VZW employees on different issues involving the Charge and other 4G phones, but they seem to steer clear of complaints of the nature we're discussing here. I wonder why? ;)

I live in seattle as well and I see this from time to time. It always happens in the same areas. This makes me think it's how the towers are configured in those areas. I would bet you will see alot of improvements as the network matures.

Configured in what way?

I guess I just don't understand how the phone can be reporting a strong signal and then it starts cycling. If the reason it downgrades to 3G is for some sort of issue regarding the signal, then the phone shouldn't be showing 5 bars and reporting low dBms. Just doesn't make sense.

I think I'm talking in circles now

What I ment for me is that I see 4g drop sometimes and go to 3g in certain areas. These areas seem to be problematic for the 4g/3g handoff. I think Seattle is having some work done on the network. Ive seen an increase in network fluctuation over the last week. Especially around the 520 bridge area and around the Edmonds/Lynwood area. I travel for work all day long up and down the I405 corridor so I tend to be aware of network strangness around those areas.

Just a hunch.

Well I sure hope you're right because to be fair, these results from where I live in Kirkland are ridiculous.....
